The Beirut offices of Saudi-owned pan-Arab newspaper Asharq al-Awsat were attacked by protestors on Friday evening.

The protesters claimed they were doing so in response to a critical cartoon which appeared in Friday’s newspaper.

The cartoon shows an image of the Lebanese flag with a caption that says:

On 21 Mar 16, the “We Want Accountability” campaign accused employees from the Sukleen waste management firm of beating up its protesters during a sit-in outside the company's headquarters in Karantina. The campaign also posted pictures of a protester with a bruised face on its Facebook page. Lebanese Marcelino Zamata, born 1982, died this evening after two men on their motorcycles stabbed him at Sassine square in Ashrafieh, National News Agency correspondent reported on Tuesday. The Internal Security Forces announced Friday the arrest of a Palestinian young man on charges of killing a Fatah al-Intifada official at the Shatila Palestinian refugee camp on Beirut's southern peripheries.
“Only hours after the crime on Thursday, and following investigations by the ISF's Intelligence Branch, the shooter was identified as M. Q., a 22-year-old Palestinian national,” the ISF said in a statement.
“He has confessed to committing the crime with an assault weapon and for personal motives,” it added.
“The probe is ongoing under the supervision of the relevant judicial authorities,” the ISF said.
Fatah al-Intifada official Ahmed Hazini, who was in charge of the so-called security committee at the Shatila camp, was found killed at dawn Thursday.

Three Lebanese men arrested in the southern city of Sidon Saturday after being accused of offending local community members and sheikhs on social media were released Monday, local media reported. Reports said south Lebanon Judge Raheef Ramadan ordered the release of Mahmoud Fanas and Youssef Kleib who had allegedly accused Sidon Mufti Sheikh Salim Sousan on social media of planning to steal money donated to a mosque for the besieged Syrian town of Madaya. The detained men said they merely shared the comments made by someone else. "Facebook is somewhere a person can freely express their opinions... I think what we did was blown out of proportion and our arrests were unnecessary," Kleib told Al-Jadeed. "If they arrested everyone who expressed their opinion on social media 90 percent of the country would be in jail," he added. He said they were taken to Beirut to be interrogated after being arrested by police intelligence. Raheef also ordered the release of Ali Jomaa who was arrested for writing posts on Facebook which allegedly offended some of Sidon’s residents and the city’s sheikhs, “after promising he wouldn’t carry out such acts again.”

Beirut police managed to foil an abduction operation in the Beirut locality of Corniche-al-Marzaa, after three anonymous snatched a woman and attempted to flee, a communiqué by the Internal Security Forces indicated. In details, a citizen contacted the police on its hotline (112) to report a kidnapping operation of a woman in Barbour, Corniche-al-Mazraa, aboard a silver Infinity car. The police spotted the vehicle and ventured into chasing it. It finally intercepted it in Corniche-al-Mazraa. Three individuals were arrested. The woman was found handcuffed, with bruises all over her face and arms.

A man suspected of impersonating security forces members and carrying out armed robberies with other individuals was arrested Wednesday, a police statement said Friday.
The statement said F.Sh., in his early 20s, was arrested in Beirut’s Tayyouneh area after being closely monitored by police who were working on a tip.
It added that he used a dark blue Renault Megane to carry out his robberies in different parts of Beirut, including Ashrafieh, Gemmayzeh, Monot and Verdun. He also robbed locations in the coastal towns of Saadiyat and Damour.
F.Sh. also allegedly confessed to robbing the consulate of an unnamed country along with other people.

Lebanese bus drivers Saturday held a protest against the influx of foreigners they accuse of taking their jobs on a main highway connecting Beirut to Jounieh, a city north of the capital.
Bus drivers have been parking their vehicles on the side of the highway since November to protest the rise of competition in the industry.
The Traffic Management Center said on Twitter that a large number of buses parked on the eastern side of Nahr al-Kalb highway where the drivers held a protest, causing bumper-to-bumper traffic.
Police deployed in the area to prevent any violence, Voice of Lebanon radio (100.5) reported, as traffic began piling up.
Earlier protests have largely been met with inaction on the part of the government, prompting the drivers to stage even more and larger protests.

Twelve activists from the You Stink campaign were beaten up and dragged out of Nejmeh Square in Downtown Beirut Thursday during a mock celebration to mark the anniversary of Parliament's vote to extend its term, with one man requiring hospitalization.
Parliament, located in the square, extended its own mandate for a second time on Nov. 5, 2014 for two years and seven months, angering civil society activists who say the move violates the Constitution and etches away at some of the country's perceived democratic principles.
Tarek Mallah, an activist in the campaign, told The Daily Star that a group of 12 young men and women had reserved a table at Al Balad Restaurant in Nejmeh Square for dinner, where they also took a cake as part of their mock celebration.
He said that as the activists got up and walked toward the square's clock tower after finishing their dinner, dozens of security forces approached them and started beating them up, even dragging some to the floor.
“They swore at us and started slapping and punching us, even after dragging us outside of the square onto Amir Bashir Street,” Mallah said.

Police Friday detained several activists who interrupted the speech of French Senate President Gerard Larcher at the opening of the 22nd Francophone Book Fair at Biel, the state-run National News Agency reported. “A few protesters interrupted the speech of Larcher, calling for the freedom of prisoner Georges Ibrahim Abdallah, prompting security forces to lead them outside the venue by force and take them to a police station,” NNA said. The International Committee to Free Georges Abdallah said in a statement that “the supporters were performing their basic democratic right to free speech. Civil society activists staged on Tuesday a sit-in by the Military Court in Beirut following the rejection of a request to release their detained colleagues.

The protesters objected to a decision by First Military Examining Magistrate Judge Riad Abou Ghida to reject a request to release five civil society detainees.

The demonstrators gathered by the Military Court and briefly blocked the road by the facility to express their condemnation of the refusal.

The detainees are Waref Suleiman, Pierre Hashash, Hussein Ibrahim, Fayez Yassine and Rami Mahfouz.

On Monday, Abou Ghida interrogated a number of detained activists, releasing five and keeping five others in custody.

Around 27 activists were arrested last week when civil society protests in downtown Beirut took a violent turn.

Civil society protests first began with the closure of the Naameh landfill in July that sparked a waste disposal crisis in Lebanon that persists to this day.

The demonstrations, which had been staged to protest the crisis, soon developed into a movement against political corruption in Lebanon.

The Lebanese army arrested a Palestinian national in the refugee camp of Sabra following a dispute that developed into an exchange of fire.
“Late on Friday, clashes that erupted between Palestinian nationals in Sabra region aggravated and developed into torching some houses and an exchange of fire,” the army said in a communique on Saturday.
“The Lebanese army, which is usually deployed in the area, interfered and resumed the situation to normal.
“Army troops raided some houses and arrested Ahmed Hassan Merhi who is wanted on charges of carrying out terrorist acts,” the statement added.
Merhi was handed to the relevant authorities and the army is on the hunt after the parties that were involved in the incident.

More than 1,000 people gathered in Downtown Beirut Saturday for an open air market that captured the capital's pre-war aura in a formidable response to a businessman who had two days earlier asked protesters to leave the district because they were "cheapening" it.
Arabic music blasted as men and women, young and old, linked arms and danced dabke in Riad al-Solh Square, which was packed with dozens of booths selling everything from sweets and drink to literature and clothing.
Those who attended the "Abu Rakhussa", or flea market, said they came to reclaim Downtown Beirut from high-class businessmen who turned the district into an exclusive quarter after the 1975-1990 Lebanese Civil War.
"It brought us back 40 years to when we used to come down here and buy things," an older woman who brought her granddaughter told Al-Jadeed. "It's not like this anymore. It made me tear."
A middle-aged man said he remembered coming to the area before the war to have passport photos taken, recalling that his uncle also owned a shop nearby.
"LL1,000 ($0.66) for a cup of lemonade," a young man was heard shouting.
Downtown Beirut was bustling before Lebanon’s civil war despite the country’s grave inequalities. In 1994, former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri established property development company Solidere to head the reconstruction of Beirut’s center, which pushed out hundreds of working-class tenants.
The event was called on by the "We Want Accountability" and "Leave us Alone" groups, and supported by the influential "You Stink" movement, after Nicolas Chammas, the head of the Beirut Traders Association, said during a gathering of business leaders Thursday that he feared protesters would turn Downtown into an Abu Rakhussa.
The words now haunt him.

Change is on the Way, is a new campaign that protesters kicked off on Saturday calling for the recovery of public lands and the free access to beaches that became private property, the state-run National News Agency said.
The movement started in Beirut’s Zaitunay Bay waterfront, where protesters took food and drinks to enjoy on the wooden corniche.

The health ministry said Tuesday that two individuals died and almost 750 people were rushed to hospitals as an unseasonal sandstorm hit Lebanon, covering the country, including Beirut, with a blanket of yellow dust.
In a statement, the ministry said two women had died at hospitals in the eastern Bekaa Valley because of the storm.
It identified one of the dead as Joumana L. and the other as Hadla Aa.
"The number of cases of choking and shortness of breath caused by the sandstorm has risen to 750," the ministry said.
The storm reached Beirut on Tuesday, a day after it engulfed the Bekaa.
The ministry also said that it has gone on alert, urging those suffering from respiratory and heart problems to stay indoors.
It said children, the elderly and pregnant women should stay home.
Red Cross official George Kettaneh also advised those having asthma problems not to leave their homes.
Meanwhile, Education Minister Elias Bou Saab ordered the closure of private schools on Wednesday as a precaution. He called on "school officials to respect this decision and to protect students from any danger."
Later on Tuesday, Prime Minister Tammam Salam issued a decree ordering the closure of all state institutions and administrations on Wednesday due to the sandstorm.
The storm was felt particularly in Lebanon's dozens of informal camps where hundreds of thousands of Syrian refugees live with limited shelter.
The Traffic Management Center, meanwhile, advised drivers to be cautious to avoid accidents because of low visibility.
The Meteorological Department at Beirut's Rafik Hariri International Airport expected the storm to last a few days.
Mouin Hamzeh, secretary general of Lebanon's governmental National Council for Scientific Research, said satellite images "clearly show that the sandstorm came from northern Iraq in the direction of central and northern Lebanon, north and east Syria, and southern Turkey."
"It usually happens twice or even three times a year in Lebanon but during spring, March and April, and the unusual thing today is the density of the storm," he told AFP.
Large parts of neighboring Syria, the Palestinian Territories, Israel and Cyprus were also shrouded in a thick cloud of dust from the storm.
In Syria, the storm swept across much of the country, reducing visibility everywhere from coastal Latakia province to eastern Deir Ezzor.
In the city of Mayadeen in Deir Ezzor, several hospitals were no longer receiving patients suffering respiratory problems after running out of oxygen tanks, said the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a monitoring group.
Syria's health minister urged citizens to "avoid prolonged exposure to the outdoors" and said hundreds of people had been treated for cases of asthma and other respiratory problems.
Thick haze was hanging over Jerusalem and much of Israel and the Palestinian Territories, with officials also warning the vulnerable to stay indoors.
The view from the Mount of Olives -- which normally offers a sweeping panorama of Jerusalem's Old City and the al-Aqsa mosque compound with its golden Dome of the Rock -- was completely obscured by the dust.

Head of the Union of Beirut Port Employees Beshara al-Asmar declared on Tuesday an open strike at the port following the resumption of waste dumping near the premises after they were halted last week. “We were surprised to see today that the digging operations and waste dumping has resumed. Two bulldozers were brought into the area,” al-Asmar told Voice of Lebanon Radio (93.3). “We have informed the related authorities about the protest following the meeting of the Union's executive body. Head of the Port Authority Hassan Qoraytem has also been informed of the move,” he added. Last week, employees of the Port held a sit-in protesting an alleged government decision to use premises close to the port as a dump site. In July, a waste-management crisis swept through the capital and Mount Lebanon after the closure of the Naameh landfill that received trash from the said areas. Streets overflew with waste and the air filled with the smell of rotting garbage. Several options have been put forward to find a solution, and three companies have offered bids to manage Beirut's waste, although a landfill space has not been found yet.

Activists from the You Reek campaign tossed garbage bags in front of Environment Minister Mohammad Machnouk's Beirut residence Thursday, calling for his resignation over the ongoing waste management crisis. According to the campaign’s Facebook page, its activists - who have organized several demonstrations over the government’s response to the near month-long crisis -tossed blue garbage bags in front of the minister's home. Posters were plastered onto the bags, with one showing an illustration of Machnouk's face. The symbolic move comes hours after an inefficient Cabinet meeting failed to reach a decision on any issue - including the trash crisis - during its weekly session. Four detainees and four fugitives were charged with belonging to terrorist groups Thursday, the state-run National News Agency reported.

Military Investigative Judge Fadi Sawwan issued indictments against three Syrians and a Lebanese who are in custody, and four other Syrian fugitives.

The Union Coordination Committee held a protest facing the Education Ministry building in Beirut Tuesday, resuming their multi-year movement to demand a wage hike.

“We call for a Parliament joint committee session to approve the wage hike in a way that guarantees our rights and dignity,” the UCC said in a joint statement, calling on all parties to free the bill from political calculations.

“We are going to escalate our movement if we do not witness any serious [actions] concerning the ranks and salary scale [issue] soon.”

Speakers at the protest representing private and public schools teachers, as well civil servants from other sectors, condemned the “procrastination” by lawmakers.

Teachers and civil servants stopped working at 12 p.m. and headed to the Education Ministry, located near the UNESCO Palace. Fewer than 100 protesters answered UCC’s call, marking a dramatic decline in numbers compared to last year’s protests.

The UCC launched their social movement more than three years ago, holding large scale demonstrations and general strikes that paralyzed many of the country’s facilities.

Despite the low turnout at Monday’s protest, the UCC will be organizing a larger demonstration and a general strike on April 23. Organizers hope the movement will again succeed in mobilizing thousands in order to exert real pressure on authorities.

The protest was paralleled by similar sit-ins in various areas around the country.

Public sector employees in Hermel and north Bekaa held a protest facing the Hermel Serail.

“The nation is ruled by an alliance of power and wealth, which led to the rise of the Union Coordination Committee all over the country as a syndicate movement... that works for a country where everyone is equal in rights and duties, away from sectarianism,” Ali al-Zein said on behalf of the UCC.

Teachers and civil servants in West Bekaa, Zahle, Tripoli, Koura, Aley and Nabatieh also joined the afternoon strike.

The teachers wondered why Lebanon’s public debt remains on the rise while the socio-economic conditions in the country are deteriorating.

“The prices are on fire and the salaries collapse. Where is the wage hike?” read one sign carried by a teacher at the Education Ministry protest.

After the demonstration in Beirut, representatives of the UCC met with Education Minister Elias Bou Saab at his office, and discussed proposed legislation on the ranks and salary scale issue.

Parliament’s joint committees held a session on March 18 in which they failed to come to any agreement on the draft law.

March 14 MPs boycotted the session, arguing that the wage hike and the 2015 draft budget were related and should be passed together.

Estimated to cost $1.2 billion, the salary scale would provide a wage hike to public sector employees including security forces and teachers at private and public schools.

On Monday, the head of the Association of Private School Teachers Nehme Mahfoud told The Daily Star that if Parliament fails to approve the wage hike, there would be no “normal end” for the current academic year.

Last year, Education Minister Elias Bou Saab issued passing certificates to all Grade 9 and Grade 12 students who took official exams after teachers refused to mark the tests in an attempt to pressure the legislature to pass the draft law.

Mahfoud said teachers would not make the same move this year because politicians were “too irresponsible” to feel the pressure and that all the consequences would be suffered by students.

On 23 Feb 15, Anti-drug Office affiliated to the Judicial Police Unit reported that it has managed after thorough follow-up and close monitoring, to foil in Lebanon the largest qualitative "raw cannabis" smuggling operation into Libya on 21 Feb 15. The Judicial police seized in the operation around 250 tons of cannabis plants, worth USD 7 million, which was intended to be smuggled across the sea into Libya within a shipment of apples. The main person involved in this smuggling operation, who is a Syrian national, was arrested.

On 16 Jan 15, hundreds of people protested in Lebanon's north, south and Beirut's suburbs against the most recent cartoon published by French satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo showing the Prophet Mohammad on its cover. In the southern Beirut suburb of Mreijeh, about 100 people gathered to denounce the mentioned cartoon. In east Beirut, police briefly blocked a major road leading to the French embassy in anticipation of a protest. But the road was later reopened after protesters failed to show up. In the southern city of Saida, Palestinian protesters gathered outside the Khaled Bin Walid mosque at the entrance of Ain al-Hilweh refugee camp after Friday prayers, shouting slogans denouncing the French magazine. Security forces deployed heavily in other parts of Saida, mainly outside the French cultural center, in anticipation of possible demonstrations in protest against the French cartoons. In the northern city of Tripoli, several dozen protesters gathered in Abdel-Hamid Karami Square, also known as Al-Nour Square, to denounce the magazine. Residents of Tripoli’s Bab al-Rammel neighborhood began their protest at the Amira Mosque and marched towards Al-Nour square. Residents of Tripoli’s Mina neighborhood also joined in on the condemnation as they mobilized outside several mosques in the northern city. The LAF however, disbanded the protests over security threats in the city, leaving no room for escalation. Demonstrations were also reported in Rama & Amayer areas in Wadi Khaled-North Lebanon.

A snow storm sweeping the Levant region cut off roads across Lebanon Wednesday, including the international Beirut-Damascus highway, isolating large areas in the north and east of the country and leaving two people dead.
In east Lebanon, a Syrian shepherd and an 8-year-old Syrian boy died in the storm in the outskirts of Shabaa near the Syrian border, the state-run National News Agency said without elaboration.

Two Israeli reconnaissance planes breached yesterday (Friday) at 6:00 a.m the Lebanese airspace over the town of Alma Shaab effectuating the usual u-turn manoeuvre above the areas of Riyak and Baalbek.

The breach lasted till 1:00 a.m, when the hostile planes left towards the occupied territories, according to a communiqué by the Army Guidance Directorate Department.

Earlier, another reconnaissance aircraft violated the Lebanese airspace at 14:50 p.m over the town of Nakoura carrying out circular flights above Beirut and its suburbs.

The Israeli plane then left Lebanese airspace at 22:50 p.m., the communiqué concluded.

An Israeli reconnaissance plane violated the Lebanese airspace on Wednesday morning at 8.00 a.m. over the town of Naqoura, effectuating u-turn maneuvers above the city of Beirut, its suburbs and southern localities, Army Command-Guidance Directorate said in a communiqué.

The Israeli plane then left the Lebanese airspace at 13.00 p.m. from above Naqoura, communiqué added.

At 8.20 a.m., two Israeli warplanes violated the Lebanese airspace over the town of Aitaroun, and effectuated circular flights over Jezzine, Shecca, and over the sea off Tripoli, communiqué said.

The Israeli warplanes then left the Lebanese airspace at 9.45 am over the sea off Naqoura, communiqué concluded.

The Lebanese Armed Forces Orientation Directorate issued on Friday the following statement:

September 13, 1993: Eight civilians—six men and two women—were killed and more than 30 injured during a Hezbollah-organized demonstration in Beirut to protest against the Israel/PLO Declaration of Principles signed in Washington, D.C. Lebanese soldiers shot in the air and then into the crowd. On September 12 the Central Security Committee (headed by the minister of the Interior) issued a statement that apparently “reminded citizens of the ban on demonstrations ordered by the Cabinet.

May 1989: Sheikh Subhi al-Saleh, a Muslim scholar, was assassinated.

August 1989: Five days of particularly intense fighting extended to Beirut, its suburbs, Metn, the Mountain, Kesrwan, Jbeil, and the Beqaa. This left 103 people dead and more than 550 wounded.

During December 1989, the fighting saw at least 10 people killed and tens wounded in West Beirut and Iqlim al-Tuffah; it was not clear how many were fighters and civilians. On December 23, 30 people were killed and 100 wounded,662 and on December 26, 50 people were killed and 175 injured in those areas.

June–July, 1989: Daily bombardment of residential areas covered Beirut, Kesrwan, Metn, Monteverde, Mkalles, Mansurieh, and North Lebanon (Koura, Batroun and Jbeil) killing and wounding scores of civilians. Notably, on June 29, two bombs hit the Barbir Hospital in West Beirut.

February 5, 1988: Two UNRWA employees, Norwegian William Jorgensen, and Swede Jan Stening, were abducted on the road between Sour and Saida.623 They were released on March 1, 1988, in West Beirut

June 17, 1987: American journalist Charles Glass was abducted in West Beirut. He was with the son of the Lebanese minister of Defense, Adel Osseiran, and his bodyguard, both of whom were also taken. The latter two were released one week later. Glass escaped 62 days later

January 13, 1987: French reporter Roger Auque was abducted in West Beirut. He was released on November 27, 1987, close to the Summerland Hotel in Beirut

April 11, 1986: Irish national Brian Keenan, an English teacher at AUB, was abducted in Beirut. He was released four years later on August 24, 1990.

December 18, 1985: The Jewish Higher Council issued a statement confirming that seven Lebanese Jews, including the council’s president, were abducted in places around Beirut in March and in May 1985. Two of their bodies were found in December 1985.

March 16, 1984: William Buckley, political officer at the U.S. embassy, was abducted in Beirut. A statement issued on October 3, 1985, by the Islamic Jihad claimed that the group had executed him.

April 18, 1983: A pickup truck drove into the courtyard of the U.S. embassy and exploded 150 kilograms of TNT. The suicide attack killed 63 people, including Robert Ames, the CIA chief intelligence officer for the Middle East. More than 100 people were injured.

April 18, 1985: Heavy fighting between Amal and Murabitun militias forced residents to spend two days in underground shelters. At least 35 civilians were killed and 167 injured, according to AFP medical sources.

August 12, 1985: Between 1 and 5 a.m., hundreds of mortar shells and long- and medium-range missiles were fired across East and West Beirut, the northern and southern suburbs, the Metn, and Kesrouan; eight people were killed and 55 injured.

June 11, 1984: During a day of intense shelling concentrated on the front lines, between 81 and 90 civilians died and between 220 and 353 were wounded.

An Israeli reconnaissance warplane violated on Sunday at 10,10 a.m. the Lebanese airspace and executed circular maneuvers over Beirut, Chouf, Jbeil and Tripoli, then left at 16,50 p.m. towards the occupied territories, according to the Army directorate.

On the night of May 31, 1976, it is reported that approximately 2,000 Syrian soldiers entered Lebanon through the north in the Akkar, allegedly to “put an end to the massacre in Qobayat; 4,000 more went in through the Beqaa, advancing along two groups—one toward the hilltops overlooking Beirut and the other toward Saida. This led the way to a full-blown confrontation between the Syrian Army and the Joint Forces.

On May 8, 1976, Elias Sarkis, the 52-year-old Central Bank governor, was elected president of the country. Kamal Jumblatt, Saeb Salam, and Raymond Edde refused to attend Parliament. The NM, headed by Jumblatt, opposed this Syrian-mediated presidential election. This opposition translated into armed clashes in Beirut and Tripoli, and was accompanied by targeted assassinations and assassination attempts.

As-Sa`iqa forces attacked the offices of two newspapers in Beirut, al-Muharrir and Beyrouth, killing the editor and six others. The papers were known to be close to the pro- Palestinian groups.

Residential areas in East and West Beirut and their suburbs came under intense shelling with the Christian militias shelling West Beirut and the Joint Forces shelling East. Each day at least 25 people were killed and dozens wounded among the fighters and the civilians.

Demonstrations took place all over the country to protest the violence, namely in West Beirut, the southern and eastern suburbs, in Baabda, Hadath, Antounieh, Choueifat, Sin al- Fil, and Nabaa. Women demonstrated in Bourj Hamoud, Mar Mikhaël, Sed al-Bouchrieh, Jdeideh, Dora, as well as in the North and in the Beqaa. At least 40,000 people demonstrated in total.

Also known as Black Thursday, this marked the beginning of widespread sectarian- based abductions, mutilation, and executions. Following the assassination of a Palestinian man in downtown Beirut, between 30 and 50 Christian civilians were summarily executed in the area of Bashura in West Beirut. The bodies were abandoned in a Muslim cemetery, close to the demarcation line, all with their genitals sliced off. This immediately led gunmen from both sides to block roads and streets in the areas under their respective control. It is reported that many of those who were abducted—Muslims and Christians—were executed, and those who were released were in many cases mutilated.
