Following an intense process of surveillance and tracking, a squad from the intelligence Gathering Branch at General Security has arrested a Syrian national affiliated to Ahmad Assir's gang in the neighborhood of Haret Saida, National News Agency correspondent said on Saturday.

The same reporter concluded that the 27 - year -old Syrian National has been already charged with an unspecified number of security offenses by the Government Commissioner at the Military Tribunal, Sami Sader.

A 24-year-old stepdad was detained along with his Syrian wife on suspicion of murdering her two-year-old toddler in the southern port city of Sidon, Internal Security Forces announced overnight. ISF said in a statement that Youssef A., a Syrian child, was brutally beaten by his Palestinian stepdad, Y.M., and then buried in a cemetery in the town of Ghazieh. A Palestinian national who tried to hypnotize a woman working at a travel agency in a southern Lebanon city Thursday was later arrested by police after he tried to escape, a security source told The Daily Star.
Police received a call from Al-Atab Travel Agency in Sidon, where they were informed that the man, Elias Aa., had tried to put an employee to sleep by saying words she did not understand. After starting to feel faint, however, the woman began to scream, prompting the man to run away, the source revealed.
The motive behind the suspect's act remains unclear.
The police later apprehended Elias in the city’s Nejmeh Square, where he was then handed over to authorities at Sidon’s police station.

Two Lebanese were arrested in the southern city of Sidon over the weekend for offending local community members and sheikhs on social media, the local state-run news agency announced Sunday.
Ali Joumaa was arrested Saturday evening by members of the Internal Security Forces Information Branch for writing Facebook posts which allegedly offended some of Sidon’s residents and the city’s sheikhs, the National News Agency said.
Joumaa insulted preachers who urged people during Friday sermons to collect donations for the residents of the besieged Syrian border town of Madaya.
The move came on the request of Sheikh Salim Sousan, the mufti of Sidon and its environs.

After thorough, intensive monitoring process of terrorist networks, a unit of the Internal Security Forces Information Branch managed to locate a depot of weapons and explosives belonging to one of al-Assir groups in the neighborhood of al-Bustan al Kabeer in Sidon, ISF Directorate General said in a communiqué on Tuesday.
The Information Branch raided said depots on 09/29/2015 and seized a large quantity of military weapons, ammunition, rocket-propelled grenades (RPG), 107 mm shells and 60mm mortar shells, communiqué added.

everal neighborhoods in the southern city of Sidon, including al-Baassiri and al-Njasa neighborhoods, went under prolific sniper early on Sunday despite a cease-fire agreement overnight between the clashing parties.

The overnight clashes, which left 3 dead and 20 wounded, led to the outbreak of fires in homes and damage to properties and cars and had forced many Palestinians to flee to the city of Sidon. Despite the agreement that was reached overnight in the Palestinian refugee camp of Ain el-Hilweh between the Islamist Jund al-Sham group and the secular Fatah Movement, intermitted gunfire continued until midnight and it included hand grenades and sniper fire that forced the closure of a number of roads leading to the camp.The Lebanese army positions on the entrance of the camps were hit by the clashes and had therefore replied to the source of fire and fortified its presence and enhanced security measures. Although contacts between the Lebanese and Palestinian factions led to a cease-fire agreement, but they failed to keep it going.

General Security officers raided three houses in the southern city of Sidon Wednesday using information gathered during interrogations of radical preacher Ahmad al-Assir.

The raids targeted the house of Khaled Awzaar, who was arrested Tuesday, and two other homes in the southern coastal city where the preacher was based.

One of the two other houses, located in the Old Sidon area, belongs to Fuad Abu Ghazala, a Palestinian Assir loyalist.

The confessions of Assir, who was arrested Saturday by General Security at Beirut airport on his way to Nigeria, have so far led to the arrest of at least five people.

General Security officers arrested on Monday a supporter of Ahmed al-Asir during a raid in the southern city of Sidon. The state-run National News Agency said H.R. was apprehended by the Information Branch of the General Security during an early morning raid on an electronics shop.
In the evening, NNA said army intelligence agents arrested in Sidon a man identified as Musaab Qaddoura. It said he is a brother of Mutassem Qaddoura, "one of the most wanted supporters of al-Asir." Dozens of hot and sweaty protesters tried to storm into the South Lebanon Water Authority Monday over water cuts but were blocked by security forces.
"We want to drink and shower," the protesters chanted, as temperatures and humidity levels steadily rise across the country with an electricity shortage preventing pumps from delivering water supplies. Internal Security Forces Intelligence Branch detained on Thursday three women in the southern port city of Sidon linked to the smuggling of Lebanese and Palestinian people to Italy on a ferry traveling from Libya. A snow storm sweeping the Levant region cut off roads across Lebanon Wednesday, including the international Beirut-Damascus highway, isolating large areas in the north and east of the country and leaving two people dead.

A Lebanese Army Intelligence unit on Tuesday arrested two Syrian nationals who failed to provide the army with legal residency documents.

This move came in the wake of an Army raid of a building resided by Syrian refugees in the villas' region of Sidon, NNA reporter said.

Three armed men raided a pharmacy on Monday in Sidon and stole cash money, as our correspondent reported.

The burglars threatened everyone inside the pharmacy with war machine guns and took over three million Lebanese Pounds and a cell phone and fled to an unknown destination.

Security forces arrived at the scene and began investigating the incident.

South Judicial Police arrested four Syrians working at a cafe near the Lebanese University in Sidon, on suspicion of involvement with Ahmed al-Assir, NNA correspondent reported on Wednesday.

South Police referred the four arrested Syrians to army intelligence for further investigation.

One of the arrested persons named Abdel Nasser A. turned out to be a supporter of al-Assir and was close to him.

Investigations are underway.

Police used force Thursday to disperse workers and factory owners blocking the main highway between Sidon and Tyre in south Lebanon to protest against the government’s failure to repair electricity cables. The five-day power outage, due to electricity workers' recent decision to stop all maintenance work, caused a total blackout in Sidon’s industrial zone, security sources told The Daily Star. The protesters burned tires, blocking traffic in both directions between the two main coastal cities for several hours Thursday morning before police unblocked the vital road by force, the sources said. The blackout, which grounded businesses and factories for the past five days, occurred after the main cable supplying the industrial zone south of Sidon caught fire. Striking EDL contract workers had adamantly refused to answer queries to repair the cable, paralyzing work at dozens of factories, the sources added. EDL contract workers said last week they will stop all maintenance work across Lebanon, cautioning that it might result in major power disruptions. Until then, the contract workers were carrying out maintenance and repair work on the electricity network despite their three-month long strike over labor issues. The Lebanese army intelligence has arrested a man on suspicion of selling chemicals used for manufacturing explosives, security officials said.

The officials, who were not identified, told al-Mustaqbal newspaper published on Wednesday that a military intelligence unit arrested Mohammed Saadeddine J. in the southern city of Sidon several days ago.

The suspect is the owner of a shop that sells cleaning material and substances, they said.

The sources said the man was referred to the military prosecution after several detainees admitted to buying from him some chemicals used in bomb-making.

Investigators are trying to find out whether Mohammed was aware that the substances he was selling were being used for terrorist activities, the officials added.

Syrians across Lebanon expressed a sense of foreboding Monday after the beheading of a second Lebanese soldier by Islamist militants heightened tensions across the country. The announcement Saturday that ISIS members had decapitated Abbas Medlej, a captive Lebanese soldier, sparked outbursts of rage across the country, largely leveled against Syrians, whom many blame for the country’s deepening security crises. Unknown men expelled a number of Syrian refugees Monday from the southern town of Houla, while residents of an encampment in Burj al-Shemali near Tyre were given written eviction notices. “We’re not against Syrian refugees,” insisted Ali Deeb, the mayor of Burj al-Shemali. “But we don’t want gatherings of camps [of Syrians] for hygiene reasons and also security reasons.” In the Beirut suburb of Burj Hammoud, residents circulated a flyer Monday demanding Syrians leave the neighborhood. “We ask Syrian citizens living in Burj Hammoud to evacuate the area by Tuesday, Sept. 9, at 6 p.m. and [the decision is] in solidarity with the martyrs of the Lebanese Army,” the flyer read. Many Lebanese blame Syrians for the clashes that erupted last month in Arsal, which resulted in the death of 19 members of the Lebanese security forces and the capture of at least 29 more. Some of the Islamists involved in the fighting are believed to have sought shelter in refugee camps in Arsal. In Arsal itself, Syrians said that while the situation between refugees and locals was particularly tense, no violent altercations had occurred since news of Medlej’s death broke Saturday night. “The situation is bad. Security forces arrested Syrian citizen Mohammad Abdullah al-Salami in Marjayoun for suspected involvement with ISIS. Second half of April 1985: Heavy bombing of residential areas in Saida and in the Palestinian camps of Mieh w Mieh and Ain al-Hilweh caused the deaths of at least 13 civilians and injured 90 more, including Lebanese Red Cross medical workers.

March 30, 1985: Twenty-eight people were killed and at least 40 wounded, the majority of whom were Lebanese and Palestinian civilians.

Some 5,500 Christian civilians left the Shuf and headed to Jezzine in South Lebanon, and 3,500 headed to eastern Saida.

The Syrian army shelled Saida, the Palestinian camp of Ain al-Hilweh, and Mieh w Mieh. Between 125 and 140 people were reportedly killed, including children, and between 350 and 400 were injured.

On the night of May 31, 1976, it is reported that approximately 2,000 Syrian soldiers entered Lebanon through the north in the Akkar, allegedly to “put an end to the massacre in Qobayat; 4,000 more went in through the Beqaa, advancing along two groups—one toward the hilltops overlooking Beirut and the other toward Saida. This led the way to a full-blown confrontation between the Syrian Army and the Joint Forces.

Renewed clashes in Saida left 11 civilians dead, including a seven-month-old baby. At least 90 people were wounded. In the following days, demonstrations in Christian-populated areas in support of the army took place, while the prime minister gave the orders to withdraw the army units from Saida immediately. Accordingly, the units, as well as members of army intelligence and the Internal Security Forces (ISF) were transported to outposts outside the city. In this tense atmosphere took place what is widely perceived today as the spark that started the war.
