: In the midst of a blistering heat wave Thursday the Syrian Zeineddine family headed to Sidon’s coast to cool off in the public beach. The trip would prove to be disastrous. Many Syrian refugees, who typically hail from landlocked areas, cannot swim. But their children often brave the waves. Tragedy struck when two girls from the Zeineddine family, Tabarak and Hanan, aged 10 and 13 respectively, drowned along Sidon’s coast while on an outing with their parents. Rescue teams affiliated with Sidon’s municipality as well as Civil Defense teams rushed to the scene. Working together, they found Tabarak and Hanan and pulled their bodies from the waters.
A Red Cross ambulance had been placed on standby and rushed the two bodies to the Hammoud University Hospital in Sidon in a desperate attempt to rescue the children. Attempts to resuscitate Tabarak and Hanan came to no avail. The girls were pronounced dead in hospital.
