BAALBEK, Lebanon: A Lebanese man fatally shot a Syrian man and wounded another in the eastern city of Baalbek Monday.

A security source told The Daily Star that a man identified as F. Zeaitar began shooting as several Syrian nationals in the Sharawneh neighborhood.

BAALBEK, Lebanon: A kidnap kingpin was reportedly killed in a failed abduction operation in east Lebanon's Bekaa Valley, a security source told The Daily Star Wednesday.

The source said that Mohammad Fayyad Ismail’s gang engaged in an overnight armed clash with one of their captives, leading to his death.

The gang reportedly kidnapped at 1.30 a.m. a Syrian father and his three children. The mother had fled to a nearby bakery to hide.

As the gang attempted to escape, the car they were using got stuck in the mud in the Ablah area, causing panic in the abductors and forcing them to emerge from the vehicle to push it forward.

The father swiftly managed to retrieve a gun off one of the abductors and fire sporadically at them. He was consequently wounded in his feet.

Fayyad, who was released last month from prison, sustained a gunshot wound to the head during the armed fight. His body was transferred to the nearby Dar Al Amal Hospital in Baalbek.

The rest of the gang fled the scene without the children and their father.

Police said on Saturday that they have arrested a three-member armed robbery and car theft gang in the eastern city of Baalbek.

An Internal Security Forces communique said police arrested three Lebanese men during a raid they carried out in Baalbek.

The suspects admitted to investigators of forming a gang that steals cars and kidnaps individuals at gunpoint along with two other accomplices.

They also confirmed that they have stolen more than 15 cars – the latest of which was a Honda CRV - in less than month for the purpose of transporting them to the town of Brital and selling them there.

Furthermore, the three men said that they have carried out armed robberies and have stolen motorcycles in areas near Baalbek.

The communique issued by the ISF said that the suspects are drug dealers.

Nagham Abbas Al Ghota, born 2007, was killed on Sunday due to a gunshot to her neck from a hunting rifle, and was transferred to Baalbeck Governmental Hospital, NNA correspondent reported.

A fugitive was killed Tuesday in an exchange of gunfire with the army in the Baalbek area of al-Taybeh, the military said in a statement.
It said troops opened fire at the plateless SUV of the fugitive, Hussein Ali Sawwan, after he failed to stop at a checkpoint and tried to run over one of the soldiers.
Sawwan succumbed to his injuries at a hospital in the region after being wounded in the shooting, the army added.
It noted that the man had been sentenced to hard labor on charges of murdering a person and that he was wanted on multiple arrest warrants.
“A Kalashnikov machinegun and a quantity of ammunition were seized from his car and Military Police has launched a probe into the incident,” the army said.

The Internal Security Forces arrested in Baalbek on Thursday a policeman after he was caught on camera stealing cars and then reselling them to dealers, the state-run National News Agency said.
The officer, who serves at one of the police stations west of the Baalbek villages was caught stealing cars on one of the surveillance cameras.
He resells the stolen vehicles to dealers and vehicle merchants in an area east of the Bekaa city of Baalbek, NNA added.
The detained has been referred to the related authorities for interrogations.

Unidentified gunmen opened fire- using heavy and medium weapons- from Ras al-Ein area towards Baalbeck, against the backdrop of the killing of Hussein Tleis and Nader Yaghi, with no casualties reported, NNA Correspondent said on Tuesday.

The General Security Department said on Thursday that it has arrested a Lebanese man for providing arms to terrorists and for sheltering them.
Sh. H. was arrested on charges of supplying terrorist groups with arms and ammunition, for storing them on their behalf and transporting them to Syrian territories, the General-Directorate of General Security said in a communique.
It also accused the suspect of sheltering the members of the terrorist groups and facilitating their movement between the Lebanese and Syrian territories.

One person was wounded after Lebanese soldiers opened fire at a vehicle that allegedly failed to heed orders to stop at a military checkpoint in east Lebanon.

The state-run National News Agency reported that soldiers manning a checkpoint at the entrance of Hay al-Sharawneh neighborhood in Baalbek ordered a man in a car to stop, and when he didn't, this prompted them to open fire.

One person was injured, NNA said, however it's still unclear clear whether it was the driver of the car.

The Internal Security Forces arrested a Lebanese national in the eastern Bekaa valley on charges of carrying out terrorist attacks in the area in favor of the Salafist al-Nour Brigades, an ISF statement said on Monday.
The detainee was arrested on charges of tossing explosives in towns and villages in the Bekaa in collaboration with a Lebanese who had been arrested earlier.
He is also accused of tasking unknown individuals of taking photos of certain targets in Bekaa towns in favor of the terrorist al-Nour Brigades which is commissioned to carry out attacks to destabilize Lebanon's security and stability.
A defected Syrian officer is said to be the instigator behind al-Nour Brigades and has commissioned them to carry out the attacks, the statement added.

The health ministry said Tuesday that two individuals died and almost 750 people were rushed to hospitals as an unseasonal sandstorm hit Lebanon, covering the country, including Beirut, with a blanket of yellow dust.
In a statement, the ministry said two women had died at hospitals in the eastern Bekaa Valley because of the storm.
It identified one of the dead as Joumana L. and the other as Hadla Aa.
"The number of cases of choking and shortness of breath caused by the sandstorm has risen to 750," the ministry said.
The storm reached Beirut on Tuesday, a day after it engulfed the Bekaa.
The ministry also said that it has gone on alert, urging those suffering from respiratory and heart problems to stay indoors.
It said children, the elderly and pregnant women should stay home.
Red Cross official George Kettaneh also advised those having asthma problems not to leave their homes.
Meanwhile, Education Minister Elias Bou Saab ordered the closure of private schools on Wednesday as a precaution. He called on "school officials to respect this decision and to protect students from any danger."
Later on Tuesday, Prime Minister Tammam Salam issued a decree ordering the closure of all state institutions and administrations on Wednesday due to the sandstorm.
The storm was felt particularly in Lebanon's dozens of informal camps where hundreds of thousands of Syrian refugees live with limited shelter.
The Traffic Management Center, meanwhile, advised drivers to be cautious to avoid accidents because of low visibility.
The Meteorological Department at Beirut's Rafik Hariri International Airport expected the storm to last a few days.
Mouin Hamzeh, secretary general of Lebanon's governmental National Council for Scientific Research, said satellite images "clearly show that the sandstorm came from northern Iraq in the direction of central and northern Lebanon, north and east Syria, and southern Turkey."
"It usually happens twice or even three times a year in Lebanon but during spring, March and April, and the unusual thing today is the density of the storm," he told AFP.
Large parts of neighboring Syria, the Palestinian Territories, Israel and Cyprus were also shrouded in a thick cloud of dust from the storm.
In Syria, the storm swept across much of the country, reducing visibility everywhere from coastal Latakia province to eastern Deir Ezzor.
In the city of Mayadeen in Deir Ezzor, several hospitals were no longer receiving patients suffering respiratory problems after running out of oxygen tanks, said the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a monitoring group.

The interior ministry said that dozens of Syrian refugees who had been rescued from a fishing boat off the coast of Cyprus on Sunday had been moved from a makeshift camp to a better-equipped facility because of the extreme weather.

General Security said on Thursday that it has arrested a Lebanese man on charges of tossing grenades in towns in the eastern Bekaa Valley and recruiting people to carry out similar attacks.
The agency's general directorate said in a communique that the man was arrested as part of general security's role in tracking terrorist groups and dormant cells.

Lebanese citizen, Abbas Hussein Chamas, born in 1996, was injured Thursday dawn when he did not respond to the orders of the Army checkpoint in Bouday- Baalbek, forcing one of the members to shoot at him, National News Agency correspondent reported on Thursday.

A task force from the Internal Security Forces (ISF) in Baalbek arrested on Saturday Palestinian national, Abdul Rahaman Hassan, for the murder of fellow national Mohammad Bader Qaoud. Qaoud was found dead in a factory in Tal al Abyad with a rope around his neck, leading preliminary investigations to deem the death a suicide. Clashes erupted Monday night in the east Lebanon city of Baalbek between the Lebanese Army and armed men after two women were detained at the Dahr al-Baidar checkpoint, a security source told The Daily Star Tuesday. An Army officer was found hanged Sunday at his house in a village in the Bekaa Valley, a security source told The Daily Star.

At least 14Syrian-based militants and three Hezbollah fighters were killed in fierce fighting in a border area in east Lebanon Sunday after militants attacked positions of the Lebanese group in the area, security sources said.

Authorities Friday seized three carloads of smuggled cigarettes from a depot in the eastern city of Baalbek.

The joint operation, which took place shortly before midday, was carried out by customs officers and members of State Security.

The cartons of confiscated cigarettes, which included several foreign brands including Pall Mall and Marlboro, were loaded into three vehicles by the security forces.

It was unclear from where the cigarettes were smuggled.

The warehouse belongs to a local resident identified only by his last name, Shukeir.

Two Israeli reconnaissance planes breached yesterday (Friday) at 6:00 a.m the Lebanese airspace over the town of Alma Shaab effectuating the usual u-turn manoeuvre above the areas of Riyak and Baalbek.

The breach lasted till 1:00 a.m, when the hostile planes left towards the occupied territories, according to a communiqué by the Army Guidance Directorate Department.

Earlier, another reconnaissance aircraft violated the Lebanese airspace at 14:50 p.m over the town of Nakoura carrying out circular flights above Beirut and its suburbs.

The Israeli plane then left Lebanese airspace at 22:50 p.m., the communiqué concluded.

Bazzalieh village locals released today (Saturday) at 2:00 a.m. Mohammad Al-Houjairi, Mohammad Al-Atrash and Bassam Al-Houjairi who were kidnapped on Friday midnight, National News Agency in Baalbek said.

He added that armed persons riding a Grand Cherokee vehicle kidnapped the above three mentioned persons while they were riding their car on Bazzalieh- Raboueh road.

The field reporter mentioned that the kidnappers also opened fire on Ala'a Hammoud of the Syrian nationality who was in the car with the three captors.

Hammoud was transferred to Dar El-Amal University hospital in Baalbek.

A gunshot from an unknown source left a seven-year-old child dead in the Baalbek district town of Maqneh on Saturday.
“The child Ali Suheil al-Meqdad was playing on the roof of a building in the town when he was hit by a gunshot to the head,”.

Two Israeli reconnaissance planes violated at 2:35 p.m. on Tuesday the Lebanese airspace off Shakka Sea and effectuated U-shaped manoeuvres across the Lebanese national skies, then left towards the occupied zone at 3:15 p.m., a Lebanese Army communiqué said on Wednesday.

Another two enemy reconnaissance planes violated at 7:00 a.m. on Tuesday the Lebanese airspace and effectuated U-shaped manoeuvres from above the regions of Riyak, Baalbek, South Lebanon, and then left towards the occupied zone at 12:05 a.m. on Wednesday.

At 11:50 a.m., a similar plane violated the Lebanese airspace from above Naqoura, and effectuated U-shaped manoeuvres in the skies of Jbeil, Batroun, Cedars, Beirut and its Suburbs, then left towards the occupied Palestinian territories at 7:00 p.m., the Army statement added.

An enemy spy drone overflew the south, Riyak and Baalbeck in the usual U-turn before returning to base within the 1948-occupied zone, Yarzeh-based Army Command/Guidance Department announced in a military communiqué today.
All in all, enemy breach of Lebanese airspace lasted over than four hours, the communiqué concluded.

An Israeli reconnaissance plane violated on Wednesday at 12:20 a.m. the Lebanese airspace from above the Southern Lebanese village of Rmeish, then effectuated U-shaped manoeuvres in the skies of Riyak, Baalbek, Hermel, and South Lebanon, a Lebanese Army communiqué said.

The enemy plane then left towards the occupied Palestinian territories at 3:25 a.m. from above Rmeish village.

An Israeli reconnaissance plane breached the Lebanese airspace at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday from above the Lebanese Southern village of Kfarkila and effectuated U-shaped manoeuvres in the skies of South Lebanon, Riyak, and Baalbek, a Lebanese Army communiqué said on Friday.

The enemy drone then left towards the occupied zone at 7:50 a.m. on Friday from above Rmeish village.

Fierce clashes have been taking place since 7 am today along the Lebanese-Syrian borders in the anti-Lebanon region, at the fronts of Toufeil in Lebanon and Sahl Rankous in Syria facing Qalamoun, National News Agency correspondent in Baalbeck reported on Wednesday.

NNA - Two 12-year-old boys met their fate on Thursday after a Jeep hit their motorbike in West Hezin village of Baalbek.

The bodies of both boys was transferred to Dar Al-Amal hospital. Meanwhile Al-Taybeh police department has launched investigations into this horrid accident.
