Syrian jets bomb militants near Arsal

Syrian warplanes Wednesday bombed militant posts on the border with Lebanon, a security source told The Daily Star.

Syrian strikes regularly target militants on the Lebanese border, near Arsal, which is also targeted by Lebanese Army units to prevent the militants from advancing.

Syrian strikes Tuesday on the Qalamoun mountains left four members of Jabhat Fatah al-Sham dead.

Operator of Facebook page calling for protests in Lebanon detained

The Internal Security Forces raided the house of the man who allegedly called for a protest against the Lebanese Army, a source told The Daily Star.

The ISF intelligence branch raided Hani al-Hussein's house in Ain al-Hilweh, specifically in the al-Taamir area which is controlled by the Army.

Police found several documents on him, and initial findings allegedly showed that he is the operator of the “Union of Syrian People in Lebanon” Facebook group.

Al-Hussein was taken to the General Security headquarters in Beirut for further investigation.

Army arrests two in Arsal raid

The Army announced that military units had arrested two suspects during a raid on the notorious northeastern border town of Arsal, a statement from the force reported. Lebanese national Aa.A. and Syrian national M.W. were arrested for allegedly harboring links to extremists in Arsal and were then referred to the judiciary for further investigation.

The Army and Army Intelligence Branch charged Aa.A. with arms trafficking and espionage. He is suspected on spying on the military’s maneuvers along the border and with sharing that intelligence with terrorist organizations.

Syrian Airstrikes Bomb 'Nusra Positions' in Arsal Outskirts

Syria airstrikes at dawn on Monday targeted positions of al-Nusra Front militant group in the northeastern border town of Arsal, the National News Agency reported.

The raids come one day after similar strikes carried out on Sunday where Syrian fighter jets bombed the al-Kassarat area, media reports had said.

Similar raids had targeted the area in recent days.

Two wanted suspected terrorists were killed in a firefight with a unit of the Lebanese Army early morning in the northeastern border town of Arsal, the military said in a statement.

Syrian nationals Yasser al-Ghawi and Atef al-Jaroudi were killed and three others were arrested during a raid by an Army. The statement said that the suspects resisted arrest prompting the shootout.

The Lebanese Army was shelling militants on the Lebanon-Syrian border with heavy artillery, Voice of Lebanon radio (93.3) said. The Lebanese Army regularly targets militants on Lebanon’s eastern border were Daesh and Jabhat Fatah al-Sham still operate.

40 suspects in Arsal attack have Daesh and Jabhat Fatah al-Sham ties

Forty suspects arrested following the attacks in Arsal have Daesh (ISIS) and Jabhat Fatah al-Sham ties, a senior Lebanese security source told The Daily Star.

“It transpires that out of the 355 [persons who were detained], there are 40 who are directly connected to Daesh and Jabhat Fatah al-Sham,” the military source said. The rest of the detainees have now been released, he added.

The 40 detainees with militant links will be held for further questions and referred to the judiciary, the source said.
