Road blocked across the country
Protesters Sunday evening blocked the main highway that connects Beirut to Tripoli at Jal al-Dib.
Initially, demonstrators gathered on an internal road in the area before making their way to the highway as the Lebanese Army heavily deployed to the area. The highway had been closed for days before the Army forced protesters to remove their cars and tents on Wednesday.
In Beirut, protesters closed the "Ring Bridge" that connects Hamra to Achrafieh, as well as Sassine Square.
Photos circulating on social media showed protesters shutting off Bliss Street near the American University of Beirut.
Protesters filled squares across Lebanon for the third week of anti-government demonstrations Sunday, dubbed the “Sunday of Unity” and the "Sunday of Pressure."
Tens of thousands of protesters gathered on the streets and central squares of cities including Beirut, Tripoli and Tyre, waving Lebanese flags and blasting revolutionary anthems through loudspeakers.
Protesters again closed Sidon's central Elia intersection in all four directions. Over the last two weeks, protesters have been engaged in a back and forth with the Lebanese Army, intermittently opening and closing the intersection. On Friday, five protesters were injured in scuffles with the Army in the area.
The road was blocked by protesters at the Chevrolet intersection near Furn al-Shubbak, amid a heavy Army presence. Roads were also blocked in Zahle, Akkar and Bekaa.
