Four suspected pimps arrested in Hamra | Internal Security Forces (ISF), Lebanese Civilians, Syrian Civilians/Refugees |
BEIRUT: Police arrested four people Friday on suspicion of organizing and facilitating prostitution in Beirut. Two Lebanese and two Syrians were detained in Beirut’s popular Hamra district by the Internal Security Forces. No other details were provided. Despite prostitution being illegal in Lebanon it remains in wide practice. Certain areas north of Beirut are frequented “red light” districts where sex services are readily available. There is a growing debate to legalize the trade in order to regulate it and protect those in the industry from exploitation. Prostitution was legal in Lebanon before 1975. As it stands, prostitutes face fines and 15 days in prison if caught. The number of women and men in the industry surged following the Syrian crisis as refugees with little support resorted to dangerous coping methods in in an attempt to provide for their families. http://www.dailystar.com.lb/News/Lebanon-News/2016/Mar-19/342994-four-su... |
