SIDON, Lebanon: Fears of a major confrontation in the Palestinian refugee camp of Ain al-Hilweh heightened Tuesday following the assassination of a senior Fatah Movement official in a car bomb near the camp. Brig. Gen. Fathi Zeidan, the Movement’s secretary in Sidon’s Mieh Mieh Camp, was killed in what was the first targeting of a Palestinian official outside a refugee camp in years.

The assassination was condemned by rival political groups of Sidon who warned against plots to destabilize Ain al-Hilweh and its environs.

Palestinian camp of Ayn el Helwe had a rough night on Saturday as tensions reached new heights with eight grenades tossed across it and rounds of gunshots terrorized the area, NNA field correspondent reported on Sunday. No casualties were reported as the joint security force launched an investigation into the incident. Certain Palestinian leaders voiced their concern that the fragile calm in the camp might be shattered. The Popular Palestinian Initiative along with numerous movements plan to stage a sit-in in the camp later today to anchor stability and compensate for those harmed.

Two more individuals died on Thursday as the result of the dense sandstorm that engulfed Lebanon, bringing the total to five since the storm hit early this week, the state-run National News Agency reported.
A 70-year-old woman died from respiratory problems caused by the sandstorm in the Akkar town of Fnaideq, NNA said.

The fatalities were identified as Radwan Abdel-Rahim, a member of the joint Palestinian security force, and Fadi Khalil, a camp resident. Clashes earlier this week between the Fatah Movement and Jund al-Sham were the fiercest in years. A fragile cease-fire was reached Tuesday but many fear further clashes.

A Fatah movement official escaped on Saturday an assassination attempt at the southern Palestinian refugee camp of Ain el-Hilweh, leading to clashes that left two people dead. The state-run National News Agency and local media said one of the bodyguards of Abou Ashraf al-Armoushi, the chief of national security at the camp, was injured when they came under fire. Al-Armoushi, who was attending the funeral of a Fatah member in the camp's Hattin neighborhood, escaped the attack unharmed. The murder attempt prompted Fatah gunmen to exchange fire with Jund al-Sham militants, which left two Palestinians dead and more than 14 others injured, said NNA. The clashes took place mostly near the camp's northern entrance, and dozens of fearful families fled to mosques in the nearby city of Sidon.

A four year old Palestinian girl died Thursday after a closet fell on her in the southern refugee camp of Ain al-Hilweh, the National News Agency reported. The NNA said Jana Ahmad suffered heavy bleeding after the closet fell on her at her parent's house in the camp, located in the coastal city of Sidon. She was rushed to Sidon's Governmental Hospital, before succumbing to her wounds, the Sidon-based news website Saida Online reported. Sidon's police department has begun investigating the incident, NNA added.

Two people were killed and two others were wounded Monday as clashes erupted between the Islamist Jund al-Sham group and the secular Fatah Movement in the Ain el-Hilweh Palestinian refugee camp.

Security forces found Saturday morning a body of an unidentified young youth (about 23 years) shot in the head at Ras Al-Ahmar neighborhood in Ain El-Helwe camp, National News Agency correspondent in Saida said.

A bomb exploded on Wednesday dawn in Ain el Helwe camp, NNA field reporter said. 

A clash took place on Thursday in Ain el Helwe during a raid carried out by the Lebanese Army and the ISF Information Branch to the shop of Abbas D. During the raid, the son of Abbas -- who is a member of the Resistance Brigades -- shot against the security forces, causing them to respond to the fire. There were zero injuries. The Army cordoned off the area instantly and is currently chasing the perpetrator.

The Lebanese Army has reinforced its security checkpoints at Ain El-Helwe entrances and carried out intensive security measures to control the comers in and out from the said camp, National News Agency correspondent reported on Wednesday.
