NNA - Airport security has arrested two days ago two Lebanese nationals suspected of being connected to terrorist groups, National News Agency correspondent disclosed today.

The same correspondent added that one Lebanese suspect has been working for a Beirut Airport - based servicing agency.

Further investigations by Airport security organs concerned is being conducted in total secrecy, the same reporter concluded.

Two Mexicans have been arrested at Beirut's Rafik Hariri International Airport after they stole $159,000 from the car of two Syrians in the Karantina area, the Internal Security Forces announced on Friday.
It said the two Syrians filed a theft report Thursday with the al-Nahr police station.
“Following intensive investigations, two individuals who were in the area when the robbery occurred were suspected of being involved in the operation,” the ISF said.
“In coordination with the al-Nahr police station and the ISF Intelligence Bureau, the Judicial Police department at RHIA managed to arrest them,” it added.
The ISF identified the two men as two Mexicans – 43-year-old E. M. and 36-year-old H. O.
“$155,000 was seized in their possession and they were referred to the al-Nahr police station for further investigations under the supervision of the relevant judicial authorities,” the ISF added.

NNA - Customs department at Beirut Rafic Hariri International airport foiled on Saturday a drug smuggling operation into Lebanon, National News Agency correspondent reported.

The field correspondent pointed out that the drugs were packaged in a creative way as they were imbued into clothes.

The reporter explained that the passenger D.A.B born in 1982 of Bulgarian nationality coming from Brazil via Addis Ababa had the clothes in the two suitcases which he was carrying imbued with drugs. The amount of drugs was estimated to weigh 40 kg and of about L.L. 200 million while its market value is much more.

Upon the notice of the Cassation Prosecution in Mount- Lebanon, the arrested passenger was transferred with the smuggled stuff to the Central Drug Fighting department in Beirut to continue investigations with him.

This operation which the Passengers' and Free Zone department at Beirut airport customs foiled today is one of the most important smuggling methods created by smugglers, the reporter said.

Authorities at the Rafik Hariri International Airport thwarted an attempt to smuggle narcotics into the country en route from Brazil, through Addis Ababa and Cairo, the state-run National News Agency reported on Thursday.
The scheme was thwarted Thursday when a Swedish national tried to smuggle the ample amounts of narcotics, that almost weigh 18kg, in 12 plastic containers, NNA added. Police said the material are believed to be cocaine paste.
The man hid the containers in two of his luggage.
The Swedish suspect and the confiscated drugs were referred to the Central Anti-Drug Office in Beirut for further investigation.

Two Lebanese sisters who were kidnapped in May by Nusra Front militants in northern Syria arrived at Beirut airport Tuesday in a swap deal which remained shrouded in secrecy.

“The sisters were released as part of a secret swap deal,” Hezbollah MP Nawar Sahli told reporters at the Rafik Hariri International Airport upon their arrival.

He would not reveal details of the negotiations, saying “secrecy is the key to success.”
Sahli hailed General Security head Maj. Gen. Abbas Ibrahim for his efforts to secure the release of the sisters, Nibal and Houriya Abdeen. The sisters are natives of the east Lebanon town of Hermel. Nibal and Houriya were kidnapped after they left the house of their third sister, Nidal, in the Rashidin neighborhood of Aleppo. They had spent two weeks at Nidal’s house. The kidnappers reportedly said at the time they wanted to negotiate their release with Hezbollah directly. Nibal and Houriya were abducted while trying to return to Lebanon from a visit to their sister who is married to a Syrian man and lives in Aleppo. A man has been detained at the Beirut airport for attempting to travel to Saudi Arabia using a fake passport, a source told The Daily Star. The source said Kh.T., born in 1988, was detained on Aug. 12 attempting to travel to Riyadh. The suspect was in possession of 300,000 Saudi Riyals ($79,969) of counterfeit money, the source said.

On 19 July 15, policemen have foiled an attempt to smuggle up to 5.15 kilograms of Captagon pills at Beirut International Airport. The 33-year-old Syrian suspect who wanted to smuggle the drugs into a North African country by hiding the pills inside a crib has been duly arrested and handed over to the Anti-narcotics Bureau for further cross-examination pending prosecution.

An attempt to smuggle 150,000 captagon pills to Saudi Arabia was thwarted recently through cooperation between authorities from Lebanon and the kingdom, the Internal Security Forces announced in a statement on Friday.

It said that the pills were concealed in paintings, packed, and then shipped by mail to Saudi Arabia.

Upon their arrival in the kingdom, Saudi police arrested three people who had showed up to receive them.

Their accomplice in Lebanon, identified as A.M., was also arrested, said that central anti-drug bureau in the judicial police department.

Each pill is estimated to cost $20 dollars, placing the price of the entire shipment at around $3 million.

On 18 Feb 15, General Security officers arrested a wanted Salafist Sheikh (Bilal Deqmaq) at Rafik Hariri International Airport after his deportation from Turkey. Deqmaq was briefly detained on November 15 by Turkish authorities on charges of smuggling cash.

Inspection members in the customs department at Rafic Hariri international airport thwarted a smuggling operation of 14 kg of cocaine via the airport, National News Agency reported on Tuesday.

The field reporter added that inspectors at the travelers' department at the airport customs found an amount of about 14 kg of viscous material of cocaine with the traveler (F.A.M) born in 1992 of Brazilian nationality, who arrived at the airport today dawn coming from Brazil via Abou Dhabi .

The reporter added that the smuggler was arrested at the airport upon a request of cassation prosecution in Mount Lebanon and was transferred to the Central Narcotics Bureau to carry on investigations with him.

September 28, 1985: East and West Beirut, the southern suburbs, the northern and southern Metn, and Kesrouan, as well as the presidential palace, the airport, and the Ministry of Defense came under heavy shelling for six hours. At least 32 civilians were killed and at least 87 injured. The shelling greatly damaged civilian infrastructure, which resulted in the closing of the passage between East and West Beirut and the closing of the airport. Planes that were landing were rerouted to the Larnaca airport in Cyprus.

A collision with a truck and two cars resulted in the death of an individual on airport road, the Traffic Management Center said.
