Palestinian camps in southern Lebanon observe general strike for Land Day

Shops and schools in Palestinian refugee camps in southern Lebanon closed their doors Saturday to mark Land Day, an annual commemoration of the killing of six unarmed Palestinians at the hands of Israeli forces in 1976.

West Baalbek shop owners protest Syrian competition

 Lebanese shop owners in West Baalbek blocked a main road between the villages of Beit Shama and Bidnayel Sunday to protest against competition from Syrian workers, the state-run National News Agency reported. Protesters carried signs calling for the government to control Syrian labor and close markets run by Syrians in order to reduce competition with Lebanese businesses and workers.

Families walk to raise awareness of colon cancer

In order to raise awareness and promote early prevention, SAID NGO, a colorectal cancer awareness association, held a walkathon Sunday in which dozens of families walked 5 kilometers along Beirut’s Corniche.
According to a report published by SAID titled “Colorectal Cancer: Exploring awareness in Lebanon,” lack of awareness of the disease “is a barrier to screening.” On March 15, the Health Ministry is set to launch a national campaign to combat the disease.
