Kiosk owners protest municipality decision to shut businesses

Several people cut the roads and burned tires in Beirut’s southern Jnah area Thursday in protest of a Ghobeiri Municipality decision to remove unlicensed coffee and juice shops on one of its main streets.

This was the municipality’s second attempt at removing the area’s unlicensed coffee shops occupying the sidewalk under the Sultan Ibrahim bridge in Jnah. In September, the municipality decided to remove all violating kiosks from its streets.

Local news channel Al-Jadeed interviewed one of the protesters, who had a juice and coffee wooden shack since 2006.

نفذت لجنة الموظفين المصروفين من شركة "سعودي اوجيه" إعتصاما في ​ساحة رياض الصلح​.

وأكد المعتصمون في بيان لهم أنه "ناشدنا ​رئيس الجمهورية​ ​ميشال عون​ ورئيس ​مجلس النواب​ ​نبيه بري​ العمل لحل قضيتنا ولم نشهد اي تدخل من أحد"، واضاف البيان :"نناشدهم من جديد ونقول لرئيس ​الحكومة​ المكلف ​سعد الحريري​ أن رمي المسؤولية لا يوصلنا الى الحل والمسؤولية مشتركة على الجميع ونرجو منكم التدخل العاجل لانهاء معاناتنا والنظر باوضاعنا والسعي لدفع مستحقاتنا".

Akkar residents protest roads conditions

قطع عدد من الاهالي واصحاب المحال التجارية الطريق العام عند مفرق ​بلدة كوشا​، احتجاجا على سوء حال الطرق واعمال الحفريات التي تنفذها احدى الشركات على الطريق العام وترك هذه الحفريات دون تعبيد.

أعلنت المديرية العامة ل​قوى الامن​ الداخلي- شعبة العلاقات العامة انه "الساعة 14.00 من ظهر اليوم 25/09/2018 أقدم 31 موقوفا في نظارة فصيلة الاوزاعي في وحدة الدرك الاقليمي، على الاحتجاج على الاجراءات المشددة المتخذة فيها، وقاموا برمي عناصر الفصيلة بما توفر معهم من داخل النظارة، من دون أن يخرجوا منها مطلقا، ومنها مادة سائلة وهي عبارة مسحوق تنظيف، فأصيب 3 منهم بجروح طفيفة، تم نقلهم الى المستشفى للمعالجة.

وبعد تدخل قائد السرية عاد الوضع الى ما كان عليه حوالي الساعة 15.00 من بعد ظهر اليوم. والتحقيق جار بإشراف ​القضاء​ المختص".

Community decries Lembibo’s death

Banchyi’s voice broke as she recounted what is known of the death of Lembibo, a domestic worker from Ethiopia who was discovered drowned inthe swimming pool of her recruiting agent in August.

Banchyi herself emigrated from Ethiopia seven years ago, lured by what she now describes as false promises. She addressed an audience of over 200 activists, members of the Ethiopian, Sri Lankan and Filipino workers communities, as well as Lebanese people, at a recent memorial service for Lembibo at the Resurrection Church in Hazmieh.

Lebanese Communist Party protests proposed tax increases

The youth sector of the Lebanese Communist Party and the Union of Lebanese Democratic Youth staged a protest Friday in front of the Central Bank in Hamra to oppose reported proposed tax increases.

According to a recent report in Al-Akhbar newspaper, Central Bank Gov. Riad Salameh suggested in a meeting last week that to resolve the country’s housing loans crisis, LL5,000 ($3.33) should be added per every 20 liters of gasoline and the Value-Added Tax also be increased.

Contracted vocational teachers protest unjust conditions

The General Confederation of Lebanese Workers and the Committee of Professional Teachers in Vocational Education staged a protest in Beirut’s Riad al-Solh Square demanding rights for contracted vocational teachers, the state-run National News Agency reported Tuesday.

You Stink protests against Beirut incinerator plan

 Scores of protesters gathered in front of the Beirut Municipality building Wednesday in a rally organized by the You Stink movement in cooperation with other civil society groups against the city’s plan to establish a waste incinerator in the capital.

Under the slogan, “You burned our breath – enough,” demonstrators from across the country, including from Tripoli, Dinnieh-Minyeh and Jbeil, gathered in Beirut.

Activists gathered outide ISF bureau

President of the Lebanese Center for Human Rights Wadih al-Asmar was questioned by the Internal Security Forces’ Anti-Cybercrimes Bureau Friday, two weeks after he was summoned to appear over a post he made on social media.

Asmar told The Daily Star after the interrogation that he had been summoned after a complaint was filed against him by the Catholic Information Center, because he tweeted a screenshot of a Facebook post that made a joke about St. Charbel. The original post had been made by online activist and comedian Charbel Khoury, who was interrogated about it in July.
