For civil marriage: Protesters call for option on home soil

Dozens of protesters rallied in Beirut over the weekend, calling on the government to recognize civil marriages carried out on home soil.

The demonstrators gathered in front of the Interior Ministry in Sanayeh, days after recently appointed Interior Minister Raya El Hassan said she was willing to engage in “serious and profound dialogue” over the issue.Lebanon has 15 separate personal status laws for its recognized religions but no civil code covering issues such as marriage.

Many Lebanese couples travel to neighboring Cyprus to tie the knot in civil ceremonies.

NGOs lobby govt on public transport

With billions of dollars poised to be injected into revitalizing Lebanon’s road networks, a new coalition of NGOs and experts is preparing to ensure public transport systems aren’t overlooked.
Six organizations launched the TRACS Transportation Coactive, to gather expertise from different transport stakeholders and academics and create a “sustainable transportation plan” to present to Cabinet.
Members of TRACS will be able to support the government’s work when things are going to plan, but “push when things aren’t going right ... so that it takes the sector seriously".

Truck owners block Dahr al-Baidar road

Truck owners gathered on the Dahr al-Baidar road Wednesday to protest new registration rules, leading General Security to step in to prevent traffic jams, the state-run National News Agency reported.

The group said in a statement that “after the Interior Ministry’s decision to suspend [the validity] of foreign license plates, these truck owners face many problems that hinder their work and affect their livelihoods.”

Sit-in in front of UNRWA's office in Burj al-Shemali camp, demanding work

 A group of Palestinian youth in Burj al-Shamali camp in the Tyre area held a sit-in in front of the office of the director of UNRWA in the camp, demanding that officials open the field of work and employment in light of poor economic situation and to allow for an improvement in living conditions.

Hundreds brave rain to march against child marriage

Hundreds marched in Beirut Saturday in a protest against child marriage to mark International Women’s Day, which falls on March 8.
The protest, which was organized by the Lebanese Women Democratic Gathering (RDFL) and the National Coalition for Protecting Children from Child Marriage, aimed to pressure Parliament to pass a law to make 18 the minimum legal age for marriage.

Hundreds marched in Beirut Saturday in a protest against child marriage to mark International Women’s Day, which falls on March 8.

Despite heavy rain, protesters gathered in Beirut’s Adlieh neighborhood and marched toward the Parliament building in Downtown under the banner “The younger, the more dangerous.”

The protest, which was organized by the Lebanese Women Democratic Gathering (RDFL) and the National Coalition for Protecting Children from Child Marriage, aimed to pressure Parliament to pass a law to make 18 the minimum legal age for marriage.

Thousands march in Beirut to protest economic policies

A few thousand demonstrators marched toward the Finance Ministry in Beirut Sunday to protest economic policies and worsening living conditions in Lebanon.

The protest, led by the Lebanese Communist Party, the Popular Nasserite Organization and a number of civil society groups, set off from the Barbir area and gathered in front of the ministry’s branch in Beshara Khoury.

Among the protesters' demands were for the state to ensure that taxation policies address wealth distribution, improve the quality of public education and provide new work opportunities.

افاد مراسل "​النشرة​" في صيدا، ان اللجنة النسائية لـ "​القوى الاسلامية​" نظمت اعتصاما امام مسجد النور في ​مخيم عين الحلوة​ احتجاجا على اجراءات التفتيش على الحواجز العسكرية التابعة للجيش اللبناني بحق النساء عامة وبحق المنقبات خاصة، ورفضا للتضييق على الناس في خروجهم من المخيم لاعمالهم ومدارسهم.
