West Baalbek shop owners protest Syrian competition

Lebanese shop owners in West Baalbek blocked a main road between the villages of Beit Shama and Bidnayel Sunday to protest against competition from Syrian workers, the state-run National News Agency reported. Protesters carried signs calling for the government to control Syrian labor and close markets run by Syrians in order to reduce competition with Lebanese businesses and workers. Some raised banners claiming that “the Lebanese have become refugees in their own country.” Similar protests have been held by Lebanese workers in a range of sectors against competition from their Syrian counterparts.
