Regional campaign targets violence against women

Activists in Beirut announced Monday the launch of a new regional campaign to fight violence against women. The EU-funded campaign includes nine civil society organizations in seven countries in the Middle East and North Africa region. In addition to Lebanon, the others include Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, Morocco, Palestine and Tunisia. The campaign is named “Shu Ostik/Ostak” - “What’s Your Story?” in English - and is addressed to both a male and female subject.

Abducted man’s family blocks main highway over lack of progress

Relatives of a man who has been missing for 24 days blocked the Barbara highway Friday morning to protest the lack of progress in solving his disappearance. At 7 a.m., protesters and relatives of Joseph Hanoush, who disappeared in the Bekaa region 24 days ago, blocked the Barbara highway near Jbeil with burning tire. Metn MP Elias Hankash asked Lebanon’s security forces to follow up on the issue. An hour after the protest, the road was reopened and the Civil Defense team in Jbeil extinguished the burning tires.

Students join global environment strike

Students marched from Horsh Beirut to Martyrs’ Square Friday morning to protest the government’s failure to address environmental degradation. The Lebanon chapters of activist groups Fridays for Future and Extinction Rebellion organized the demonstration in solidarity with a global movement of student walkouts intended to call attention to climate change. About 50 people attended the strike in Beirut Friday, joining an estimated 1 million protesters in over 150 countries. Protesters stated that this protest will be repeated on Fridays.

Journalists and activists held a solidarity stand with Nida Al Watan newspaper after its editor-in-chief and responsible director were summoned to appear at the Justice Palace over a controversial front-page article published last week.

Liberated detainees stage in outside military court

A number of detainees that had been released from Khiam detention center and the Israeli prisons are staging a sit-in outside the military court in Beirut, in concurrence with the interrogation session of Israeli collaborator, Amer Elias Fakhouri.

Bireh locals block Masnaa-Rashaya road

Locals of the Rashaya town of Bireh blocked the road linking their town to al-Masnaa, in protest at the month-old outage of drinking water.

People with special needs cut off Mina road to protest their kiosks’ removal

A group of disabled persons and their families in the North have cut off the road leading to the Municipality of al-Mina - Maritime Highway, and set up a tent in the middle of the road, with the participation of a delegation from the Labor Union in the North, including former MP Mesbah al-Ahdab, to protest the removal of their kiosks along the Corniche and the Municipality’s failure to fulfill its promises to hire them.

Farmers block Bekaa road to protest Syrian imports

Fruit and vegetable farmers in Bekaa blocked the main road between Zahle and Ferzol Saturday to protest against smuggled Syrian produce.Farmers tipped crates of fruit and vegetables onto the road, calling on the government to protect Lebanese produce against Syrian competition.On Wednesday July 10th, agricultural unions’ leader Ali Shuman urged Bekaa farmers to take to the streets to protest the “tragic reality of Lebanese farms.”

Airport technicians protest delayed pay

Technicians at Beirut's Rafik Hariri International Airport protested Friday morning to demand delayed payments for night and overtime work. Director-General of Civil Aviation Mohammad Chehabeddine said the protest, which lasted an hour, did not affect any flights. Chehabeddine said the workers had not received overtime pay for five months. He said the delay was due to a decision by the Finance Ministry that public employees be paid only their regular wages and transportation fees until the draft 2019 state budget is passed.

Protesters hold peaceful sit-in against Bassil's visit to Tripoli

A few young people gathered at the Abdul Hamid Karami Square in a peaceful sit-in to protest the visit of Minister of Foreign Affairs Gibran Bassil to Tripoli, amidst heavy deployment of the Lebanese Army and Security Forces in the region.
