Disabled Lebanese protest proposed ministry cuts

Hundreds of disabled persons and activists gathered Thursday near the presidential palace in Baabda to protest a potential 20 percent cut to the Social Affairs Ministry’s 2018 budget.

The protesters were bussed to the area from across Lebanon by the National Federation for Persons with Disabilities, which represents some 100 groups dedicated to fighting for disabled rights.

Protester blocked road in Aramoun

A Hizbullah supporter was handed over to security forces Tuesday evening after he shot and wounded two men during a personal dispute in the Aley District town of Aramoun, the National News Agency said.

NNA said the shooter, identified as Hajj Abu Fadi Nael, was handed over after the Progressive Socialist Party's leadership and MP Akram Shehayyeb communicated with Hizbullah, which “lifted the political cover off” the man.

The agency identified the injured as Jawad Bou Ghannam and Yamen Malaeb, saying they were transferred to hospital with gunshot wounds to their legs.

PSP supporters protest Al-Jadeed over Jumblatt skit

Dozens of Progressive Socialist Party supporters protested in front of Al-Jadeed television’s headquarters in Moseitbeh Monday night, after a comedy skit recently aired by the network mocked PSP chief Walid Jumblatt.

“With our souls and our blood, we support you Walid,” protestors chanted. An unidentified spokesperson for the demonstration called on Al-Jadeed to uphold higher standards as a media outlet.

Sidon commemorates Popular Nasserite Organization founder

Sidon residents took to the streets to commemorate the 43rd anniversary of the death of the Popular Nasserite Organization founder, the late Sidon MP Maarouf Saad.

"Maarouf, the voice of the people, Maarouf, the voice of the truth," people chanted, waving Lebanese and Palestinian flags and posters of Saad.

Saad was assassinated on Feb. 26, 1975, and his death is considered a defining moment that contributed to the 1975-1990 Civil War.

Protestors at Russian Embassy in Beirut denounce Ghouta bombing

A protest against the ongoing Syrian government offensive in the Damascus suburb of Eastern Ghouta was held in front of the Russian Embassy in Beirut on Sunday.

The demonstration, called for by the Committee of Muslim Scholars, was attended by more than 100 people, many of whom were Sunni religious officials.

Joint protest against sectarian quotas outside Baabda Palace

Groups held a joint protest outside the presidential Baabda Palace Tuesday, where the President, Speaker and Prime Minister met concurrently.

The various groups included the committee following up with successful applicants for Lebanon’s civil service, the IT staff of the Ministry of Agriculture, accountants in public administrations and secondary school teachers. They held a common protest demanding their ‘fair share’ outside of sectarian quotas.

Kurdish demonstration in front of Turkish Embassy protests Afrin offensive

Lebanon: A protest against the Turkish military operation in Syria’s Kurdish-held Afrin region was held in front of the Turkish Embassy in Metn’s Rabieh.

The Turkish offensive, dubbed “Operation Olive Branch,” began Saturday, pushing to clear YPG Kurdish militia fighters from Afrin.

The increasing death toll drew outrage from some 200 protesters gathered in front of the embassy, raising Kurdish flags and chanting statements against Turkey’s offensive, a security source told The Daily Star.

Karantina residents protest planned incinerator

Residents of Beirut’s Karantina area staged a protest against plans to build a trash incinerator in the working class neighborhood as part of a government initiative to deal with Lebanon’s waste crisis.

“When you talk about an incinerator, you are saying let the inhabitants find somewhere else to live,” one protestor told local media.

The protest was held near the area’s slaughterhouse, with participants lamenting the lack of attention paid by the government to the area, which during the 2015 garbage crisis was inundated with large piles of trash.

UNRWA employees strike over US cuts, agency response

Lebanon: Employees of the U.N. agency for Palestinian refugees held strikes across Lebanon to protest the agency’s handling of United States contribution cuts.

"Under the pretext of fiscal deficit and the danger this poses to refugees, the [UNRWA] administration surprises us with worse and worse measures," the head of the UNRWA workers’ union, Ibrahim al-Saadi, said in Sidon.

According to the protesters, UNRWA has blocked contract workers from obtaining long-term employment, citing the financial crisis the agency is facing.
