Protestors at Russian Embassy in Beirut denounce Ghouta bombing

A protest against the ongoing Syrian government offensive in the Damascus suburb of Eastern Ghouta was held in front of the Russian Embassy in Beirut on Sunday.

The demonstration, called for by the Committee of Muslim Scholars, was attended by more than 100 people, many of whom were Sunni religious officials.

Protesters reportedly criticized the international community’s inability to stop the offensive, which has seen some of the deadliest bombings since the Syrian war began seven years ago. At least 462 people have been killed in the week-long bombing campaign, including at least 99 children. Many hundreds have also been wounded.

Russia is a major backer of the Syrian regime, credited with swinging the war in Syrian President Bashar Assad’s favor after it entered the conflict in 2015.
