Uber drivers protest Machnouk’s attacks on service

Uber drivers held an impromptu protest Thursday, a day after Interior Minister Nouhad Machnouk said that the popular ride-hailing app was unsafe and called on the Lebanese people to use local taxi companies instead. The minister’s remarks were made after a driver contracted with the company was named as the prime suspect in the murder of British national Rebecca Dykes.

Around 56 Uber drivers staged the Thursday morning demonstration near the Beirut Digital District building Downtown where Uber’s Lebanon offices are located.

Protesters rally against attacks on press freedom

Over 100 protesters gathered outside the Justice Ministry to demonstrate against what they said was increasing repression of Lebanon’s media and charges leveled against television presenter Marcel Ghanem. The demonstration brought together civil society actors, journalists and politicians to push back against what was described as the Justice Ministry’s “growing suppression” of the media.

Protesters also warned that any authority that attempts to stifle freedom of expression would not refrain from committing more serious crimes in the future, local TV channel LBCI reported.

Parents protest increase in school tuition, as school promotes dialogue

A committee of school children’s parents held a sit-in to protest tuition increases in front of Notre Dame School in Kesrouan’s Zouk Mosbeh, according to local media reports.

Protesters cut electricity in Akkar

قطع المعتصمون من أهالي بلدات منطقة الجومة في عكار، ​التيار الكهربائي​ عن كلّ البلدات الّتي تتغذّى من محطة التوزيع في بلدة ​بيت ملات​.

وأكّد نائب رئيس بلدية ​عكار العتيقة​ الدكتور رامي ملحم، أنّ "قطع التيار طال خطّ الجرد وخطّ الدريب وخطّ الجومة، وأنّ انقطاع التيار سوف يستمرّ حتّى تحقيق مطالب المعتصمين بتوزيع متساو بين البلدات كافّة كما كانت سابق، وأنّ المعتصمين سيبقون في المكان لمنع أي محاولة لتشغيل التيار إذا لم يشمل كلّ البلدات".

وعملت الأجهزة الأمنية المختصة على تأمين الأمن في محيط المحطة.

Ain al-Hilweh residents shutter UNRWA offices

The victims of recent Ain al-Hilweh clashes - August 2017 - shut down UNRWA offices in the area of the southern city of Sidon in protest against reported discrimination in compensation for damages.   The closure is the result of UNRWA’s "unjust decision," which distinguishes between affected neighborhoods that are compensated for the unfortunate clashes in the camp. The provided compensation, according to the protesters, does not include many of the houses and areas affected by the August clashes, which left four dead, dozens wounded and destroyed large parts of the camp.
