You Stink protests against Beirut incinerator plan

Scores of protesters gathered in front of the Beirut Municipality building Wednesday in a rally organized by the You Stink movement in cooperation with other civil society groups against the city’s plan to establish a waste incinerator in the capital.

Under the slogan, “You burned our breath – enough,” demonstrators from across the country, including from Tripoli, Dinnieh-Minyeh and Jbeil, gathered in Beirut.

“With your policies and your corruption, you [cut off] our breath,” a You Stink representative said, reading from a statement from the group, which also denounced unemployment, inadequate infrastructure, the electricity crisis and corruption.

You Stink is an anti-corruption group formed during the 2015 garbage crisis. “There can’t be an incinerator in Karantina,” Sabaa Party MP Paula Yaacoubian said, speaking with reporters.

“We will continue [to protest] even if we have to camp here,” she added.
