Hundreds march to mark women’s day

Hundreds of protesters gathered in Beirut’s streets Sunday for the annual International Women’s Day march, uniting under the slogan “For a just economy, we will march.”

The march - replete with signs and banners calling for equal rights and improved living conditions - began under Fouad Chehab’s Bridge and ended at Mina al-Hosn.

Campaign to save Bisri Valley petitions World Bank

Dozens gathered outside the World Bank offices in Downtown Beirut Monday to submit a petition protesting the creation of a 125-million cubic meter reservoir in south Lebanon’s Bisri Valley.
The World Bank is one of the main financers of the controversial Bisri Dam project, which it says will benefit over 1.6 million people living in greater Beirut and Mount Lebanon.

But environmental groups strongly oppose the creation of the dam, citing issues related to biodiversity, cultural heritage, public health, local economy and seismic activity.

Workers at Rafik Hariri University Hospital strike in demand of wage hike

Workers at Rafik Hariri University Hospital held a three-hour strike Tuesday morning to protest delays in implementing their wage hikes.
Bassam Akoum, a representative of employees at the hospital, said Tuesday’s strike, which started at 7 a.m. and ended at 10 a.m., did not affect the hospital’s emergency section or other urgent operations.
He said that during the strike, the Health Ministry contacted the employees to arrange a meeting with the minister.

LU staff protests salary, pension injustices

Staff from Lebanon’s only public university Wednesday staged a protest to coincide with a strike demanding the implementation of the salary scale law and improvements to their pensions.
The protest was held in Beirut’s Riyad al-Solh Square, and coincided with a parliamentary session in neighboring Nijmeh Square - the first legislative session since Cabinet was formed, in January.

Protesters in Aley call for unity in confronting sectarian system

A number of citizens from Aley and the Upper Metn region staged a sit-in outside the Serail of Aley on Sunday, marking the "National Day of Popular Revolution against the Authority of Corruption", a day of national dignity where they raised slogans and banners denouncing the performance of the political parties in power.

Land Transport Unions Hold Strike in Front of Vehicle Inspection Centers

The Land Transportation Union announced that it held a strike in front of Motor Vehicle Inspection centers nationwide.

The Union's decision came following a meeting at the General Labor Confederation.

Protesters block south Beirut highway overnight over increased electricity cuts

Demonstrators Monday night blocked two points on a main highway south of Beirut with burning tires to protest the recent increase in electricity rationing.
At around 10 p.m., a group of protesters gathered near the Kuwaiti Embassy in Burj al-Barajneh while another group amassed about a kilometer north up the highway at Camille Chamoun Sports City Stadium in Bir Hasan.

‘No confidence’ protest held in Beirut against new govt

Protesters marched through Downtown Beirut Sunday to express their distrust in the new government, days after it won Parliament’s vote of confidence.
The “no confidence” march, organized by various civil society organizations, set off from Bechara al-Khoury Street to Riad al-Solh Square, where officials from the Lebanese Communist Party and the Popular Nasserite Organization delivered speeches as supporters waved the parties’ flags.

أوضح رئيس ​رابطة التعليم الثانوي​ ​نزيه جباوي​، على هامش اعتصام نفّذه الأساتذة المعينون في كلية التربية في ​الجامعة اللبنانية​، أمام مبنى وزارة التربية- ​الأونيسكو​، إلى أنّ "الإضراب كان لسبب واحد هو الغموض حيال الدرجات الست، وهناك قرار درجات من كلية التربية في الجامعة اللبنانية من السنة الماضية والدرجات بعد التعيين. بقية الأمور ليس لدينا مشكلة فيها، فالرواتب سارت ومرسوم الإلحاق والتعيين الّذي سيلحظ التثبيت أيضًا".
