Civil Defense volunteers call for paid jobs

Civil Defense volunteers protested in Beirut’s Riad al-Solh Square Thursday, demanding that Cabinet approve a decree that would secure them paid, full-time jobs, the state-run National News Agency reported. The volunteers threatened to escalate their protests if the decree is not approved.

Lebanon has some 2,553 Civil Defense volunteers. Most are ambulance first responders, rescue workers and firefighters.

The volunteers have demanded full-time employment for several years and held numerous demonstrations on the issue.

People with special needs, families protest center's closure

People with special needs whose rehabilitation center closed because the government failed to pay it staged a protest alongside their families in Downtown Beirut Wednesday morning, demanding that Cabinet back-pay the funds the state owes so the center can reopen.

West Baalbek shop owners protest Syrian competition

 Lebanese shop owners in West Baalbek blocked a main road between the villages of Beit Shama and Bidnayel Sunday to protest against competition from Syrian workers, the state-run National News Agency reported. Protesters carried signs calling for the government to control Syrian labor and close markets run by Syrians in order to reduce competition with Lebanese businesses and workers.

Hundreds march to mark women’s day

Hundreds of protesters gathered in Beirut’s streets Sunday for the annual International Women’s Day march, uniting under the slogan “For a just economy, we will march.”

The march - replete with signs and banners calling for equal rights and improved living conditions - began under Fouad Chehab’s Bridge and ended at Mina al-Hosn.

Families walk to raise awareness of colon cancer

In order to raise awareness and promote early prevention, SAID NGO, a colorectal cancer awareness association, held a walkathon Sunday in which dozens of families walked 5 kilometers along Beirut’s Corniche.
According to a report published by SAID titled “Colorectal Cancer: Exploring awareness in Lebanon,” lack of awareness of the disease “is a barrier to screening.” On March 15, the Health Ministry is set to launch a national campaign to combat the disease.
