Factory owners protest pollution crackdown

Over 50 factory owners in Baalbeck briefly blocked the road connecting Qsarnaba to Bednayel to protest a crackdown on factories polluting the Litani River. Industry Minister Wael Abu Faour announced earlier this week that his ministry has temporarily closed 14 factories and industrial plants. He also gave deadlines for factories to prevent polluted and untreated water from entering the river, after which the ministry, in coordination with the Litani River Authority, would start closing down noncompliant businesses.

 

 


 

 

Sit-ins and marches in Sidon, Ain el-Hilweh in protest against Minister of Labor's decision

Lebanese and Palestinians staged sit-ins in the city's Martyrs' Square after the Friday prayers, which turned into a march across the streets of Sidon, under the Lebanese army and security forces watchful eyes. Demonstrators held banners condemning the decision of Lebanon's Labor Minister, and confirming that" Palestinians are refugees, until they can return to their country. They are not foreigners." They called for "further protests, until this decision is dropped." Protests were also staged in the Ain el-Hilweh camp.

Ogero employees protest proposed salary cuts

Employees at state-run telecommunications company Ogero went on strike across Lebanon to oppose cuts to their salaries proposed in this year’s draft budget. The allocations to Ogero earmarked for wages and salaries witnessed a significant reduction in the budget referred to Parliament from the Finance and Budget Committee.

State employees strike over austerity measures in budget

Many state employees across Lebanon went on strike and some gathered in Martyrs' Square in protest against the draft 2019 state budget as lawmakers convened to discuss it.

The administrative committee of the League of Public Administration Employees called for a general strike in all administrations to protest the budget. The articles protested by the employees include Article 82, which would give employees 15 days of annual vacation instead of 20, and Article 90, which would require them to work for 25 years instead of 20 years before retiring.

Farmers block Bekaa road to protest Syrian imports

Fruit and vegetable farmers in Bekaa blocked the main road between Zahle and Ferzol Saturday to protest against smuggled Syrian produce.Farmers tipped crates of fruit and vegetables onto the road, calling on the government to protect Lebanese produce against Syrian competition.On Wednesday July 10th, agricultural unions’ leader Ali Shuman urged Bekaa farmers to take to the streets to protest the “tragic reality of Lebanese farms.”

Airport technicians protest delayed pay

Technicians at Beirut's Rafik Hariri International Airport protested Friday morning to demand delayed payments for night and overtime work. Director-General of Civil Aviation Mohammad Chehabeddine said the protest, which lasted an hour, did not affect any flights. Chehabeddine said the workers had not received overtime pay for five months. He said the delay was due to a decision by the Finance Ministry that public employees be paid only their regular wages and transportation fees until the draft 2019 state budget is passed.
