Municipality employees from across the country gathered in Beirut’s Riad al-Solh Square Monday to demand overdue funding from the state - a crisis they said has severely impacted their quality of life.A source from the premier’s office said they had “no confirmation” on the topic, while Baabda Palace could not immediately be reached for comment.

Public school secondary teachers strike

Members of the Association of Public Secondary School Teachers in a number of Lebanese towns went on strike Wednesday to protest late salaries for former trainee teachers and demand their inclusion in the salary-scale law.In a statement Tuesday, the association said Finance Minister Ali Hasan Khalil had approved the disbursement of the late salaries. In a meeting between Jibawi and Education Minister Akram Chehayeb, the latter promised teachers that their salaries would come in regularly in the coming months.

Civil Defense volunteers call for paid jobs

Civil Defense volunteers protested in Beirut’s Riad al-Solh Square Thursday, demanding that Cabinet approve a decree that would secure them paid, full-time jobs, the state-run National News Agency reported. The volunteers threatened to escalate their protests if the decree is not approved.

Lebanon has some 2,553 Civil Defense volunteers. Most are ambulance first responders, rescue workers and firefighters.

The volunteers have demanded full-time employment for several years and held numerous demonstrations on the issue.
