Municipal workers protest overdue state funding

Municipality employees from across the country gathered in Beirut’s Riad al-Solh Square Monday to demand overdue funding from the state - a crisis they said has severely impacted their quality of life.A source from the premier’s office said they had “no confirmation” on the topic, while Baabda Palace could not immediately be reached for comment.

At the protest, which bore the slogan, “Municipality money is a right,” demonstrators spoke of the suffering of municipality employees, who have not received their wages for months because of payment delays from the Independent Municipal Fund.

Municipalities across the country have not received their allocations from the fund for 2017 and 2018. The funding for 2019 is not yet due.
