Municipal workers in a number of towns in the Bekaa Valley held a one-hour protest Monday to demand that the state release overdue funding to municipalities.
Municipalities across the country have not received their allocations from the Independent Municipal Fund for 2017 and 2018. The funding for 2019 is not yet due.The mayor said his municipality has been paying workers their wages from the fees collected for municipal services, but due to the difficult economic situation, “we do not have [much] to rely on.”On Feb. 27, Interior Minister Raya El Hassan signed a decree to distribute the Independent Municipal Fund allocations for 2017, and sent it to the Finance Ministry to endorse it.
