Uprising day 14: Army, protesters open major roads

The Lebanese Army forcibly opened the highway north of Beirut Wednesday, almost an hour after its call on protesters to voluntarily open the roads.

Soldiers pushed away around 50 protesters blocking the highway at Jal al-Dib and took down the tents they had set up in the area. The force of over 100 soldiers also tried to push parked cars out of the way before their owners moved them in fear of the soldiers.

Army Intelligence denied local TV channels LBCI and Al Jadeed from filming as they removed the protesters from the highway.

Lebanese cautiously welcome Hariri’s resignation

Lebanese cautiously welcomed Prime Minister Saad Hariri’s resignation Tuesday in Downtown Beirut, following violent clashes between protesters and supporters of Hezbollah and the Amal Movement.

On the 13th day of nationwide protests, a mob destroyed and burned tents belonging to protesters in Downtown Beirut’s Martyrs’ Square and Riad al-Solh, after beating demonstrators who were blocking the nearby “Ring Bridge.”

Hariri’s announcement came shortly after riot police and the Army dispersed the attackers and pushed them out of Downtown Beirut.

A number of protesters staged sit-ins outside Banque Du Liban branches in several regions, including Hamra Street in Beirut, Sidon, Baalbek and Nabatieh.

Protests show no sign of letting up despite rain, fatigue

The popular protests that have mobilized hundreds of thousands of Lebanese over the past 12 days showed no signs of letting up Monday despite a dwindling number of participants.

Turnout was lower than on the previous days of the anti-government protests, exacerbated by intermittent downpours throughout the day. Nevertheless, a few dozen protesters braved the elements in Beirut’s Riad al-Solh Square, dancing the traditional dabke dance, clad in plastic ponchos.

Protests continue on 12th day

Protesters began blocking streets across Lebanon with cars and piles of tires Monday morning, marking the 12th day of a national uprising against the government.This latest action come after a poster circulated on social media late Sunday, calling on all citizens to obstruct the country’s roads with their cars. "A million cars on the street, what will they do with them?" it read. Scores of protesters continued to block Beirut’s Ring Bridge with apartment furniture, including couches and mattresses.

Protests continue for 11th day with a human chain

As Sunday wore on, the numbers of protesters in the streets and squares continued to increas,tens of thousands of protesters linked arms in a bid to form a 170-kilometer “Lebanese Human Chain” spanning the country from north to south to symbolize national unity.

Lebanese women stage peaceful demonstration near Baalbek ruins

Lebanese women in Baalbek staged a peaceful protest near the entrance of the city’s ruins, raising the slogan “Baalbek the city of peace” and holding white roses as a peace sign.

The protesters chanted slogans rejecting sectarianism and raising a series of demands including fighting corruption, prosecuting corrupt persons, ending the waste of public funds, recovery of stolen funds and implementing development projects in the city of Baalbek.

Protesters take the streets for the 10th day

Demonstrators in Lebanon blocked roads and trickled into streets across the country for a tenth consecutive day Saturday, defying what they said were attempts by Hizbullah to defuse their movement.

The demonstrators -- who have thronged towns and cities across Lebanon since October 17 -- are demanding the removal of the entire political class, accusing many across different parties of systematic corruption.
