Security deployed after ISF officer was hit by Resistance Brigades guard

A man from the Hezbollah-linked Resistance Brigades allegedly hit a member of the Internal Security Forces over the head with a gun Thursday in southern Lebanon, a security source informed The Daily Star.

An ISF officer was on patrol in Sidon when he stationed himself by a shop near the residence and offices of Sheikh Maher Hammoud, who is head of the Union of Resistance Scholars.

A man, reportedly one of Hammoud’s security guards, asked the officer to leave, the source said, but the officer refused.

The guard, allegedly “angered by his words and refusal,” hit the officer over the head with his gun before escaping into one of Hammoud’s offices. The officer, accompanied by backup, entered and surrounded the building to prevent the suspect from escaping.

A gun was reportedly fired into the air to disperse crowds.

The ISF, along with the Lebanese Army, cordoned off the area and ordered those involved to surrender. Top Hezbollah security leaders interfered to prevent further violence.
