Protests erupt nation-wide over new taxes

From Tripoli to Tyre and Baalbeck to Beirut, thousands of Lebanese took to the streets Thursday night, forcing the government to backtrack on an unpopular tax it had approved just a day earlier on internet-based phone calls over services like WhatsApp. Protesters blocked main roads across Lebanon with burning tyres. Several roads in Beirut were also cut with protesters igniting garbage bins, wood and other materials. Skirmishes took place between protesters and riot police blocking the road to the Serial, in which at least two protesters were injured.

PSP supporters protest FPM rhetoric and economic situation

Hundreds of Progressive Socialist Party supporters took to the streets of Downtown Beirut Monday in a strong rebuke of Free Patriotic Movement head Gebran Bassil’s aggressive rhetoric over the weekend.The march from the Cola area toward Martyrs’ Square took place during a Cabinet meeting intended to be one of the final sessions before sending the 2020 budget to Parliament for approval.

Young men protest the reopening of Al Naameh landfill

A group of young men gathered at the entrance of the Naameh landfill this afternoon, to protest the recently circulated news about reopening the landfill, and also attempted to cut-off the coastal highway for some time in al-Naameh locality.

Dozens protest Turkish invasion outside UN headquarters in Beirut

Dozens of people gathered Friday morning in front of the United Nations headquarters in Beirut to protest Turkey's military offensive against Kurdish forces in northern Syria. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan began the offensive two days ago, after having received a green light from U.S. President Donald Trump during a phone call several days earlier. The incursion has opened a major new front in the eight-year Syrian civil war and drawn fierce criticism internationally.

 

Sit-in organized in Nabatieh to protest garbage accumulation

A group of activists and citizens organized a sit-in in the center of the commercial market in the city of Nabatieh to protest the accumulation of waste in the streets and containers. Various roads in the heart of Nabatieh were blocked in the process causing traffic congestion. 

Charqiyeh residents organize sit-in

The residents of Charqiyeh staged a sit-in in the town square to protest  the establishment of a landfill for the Nabatiyeh area in the eastern outskirts of their town because of the environmental and health damages, especially since the landfill is intended to be built near residential houses and schools.

Veterans block VAT building entrances in protest

Veterans blocked the entrances of the Finance Ministry’s VAT building protesting austerity measures imposed on them in the 2019 budget and delays to payments for new retirees. Retired Brig. Gen. Sami al-Rammah called on the Finance Ministry to pay delayed “retirement benefits and school aid” to the veterans.The veterans held a series of protests against deductions to their pensions in the 2019 state budget before it was endorsed by Parliament in July.

Protesters block road facing Ghaziye junction with burning tires

A number of angry yung protesters cut off the southern highway at the Ghaziye junction, facing Al-Amelieh cooperative, with flaming tires, in protest of the deteriorating economic and financial situation.

Protesters block the Nabatie - Kfar Dajjal road

A group of young protesters burned banners this evening in the middle of the main road between Kfar Dajjal and Nabatieh. They gathered in the middle of the road to protest against the poor living conditions and the economic situation while chanting slogans against state and government officials. An internal security force patrol came to the scene and monitored the youth movement. 

Temporary road block in Hermel by protesters

 Dozens of residents temporarily blocked the road facing Hermel's Seray in protest against the deteriorating economic and living conditions there. They raised  slogans denouncing corruption and negligence.
