PSP supporters protest FPM rhetoric and economic situation
Hundreds of Progressive Socialist Party supporters took to the streets of Downtown Beirut Monday in a strong rebuke of Free Patriotic Movement head Gebran Bassil’s aggressive rhetoric over the weekend. The march from the Cola area toward Martyrs’ Square took place during a Cabinet meeting intended to be one of the final sessions before sending the 2020 budget to Parliament for approval. The PSP supporters’ march widened the divisions with the FPM as they protested against the country’s deteriorating economic situation and crackdowns on activists and freedom of speech. The demonstration also came after Bassil’s announcement Sunday that he would visit Syria to secure the return of Syrian refugees in Lebanon to their country.
