Prisoner hunger strike for amnesty escalates
The campaign to grant a general amnesty for some prisoners in Lebanon escalated sharply Thursday when inmates set a fire inside Tripoli’s Qibbeh Prison and their families burned tires outside and attempted to enter.
Days before, prisoners in both Qibbeh and Metn’s Roumieh Prison had started a hunger strike to call for an amnesty and protest prison conditions.
A prominent general amnesty activist with knowledge of the situation said security forces had tried to end the strike Thursday, leading some prisoners to riot and set a fire.
