The Amal Movement staged a protest Saturday in front of the Zahrani power plant in southern Lebanon, demanding an end to deals bringing power barges to the country and calling for the establishment of permanent power plants instead.

Speaking at the protest, Amal caretaker Finance Minister Ali Hasan Khalil said, “This stand comes to reassure our commitment to granting the people their right to receive the amount of electricity that meets their needs.”

وعلى وقع الأغنية المهداة إلى المفقودين "لا ضليت ولا فليت" بصوت الفنانة شانتال بيطار، كلمات الشاعرة سوسن مرتضى ولحن الفنان أحمد قعبور، تجمع أهالي المفقودين والاهالي الذين توافدوا من بلدات الشوف وعاليه، إضافة إلى اهالي العزونية ومختار البلدة فوزي عماد، ووفد من جمعية المرأة الدرزية ترأسته كميليا حليمة بلان، في حضور ممثلين عن البعثة الدولية للصليب الأحمر.

The Unions and Leagues of Land Transport closed down main roads across the country protesting against what it says is inadequate government supervision of competition from non-Lebanese drivers, according to local media reports.

Protests were called for from Zahle in the Bekaa up to north Lebanon’s Akkar, through Beirut and down to south Lebanon, with truck drivers and taxi drivers calling on the government to stop undocumented and unlicensed drivers from working in the country.

Activists protested the violation of freedom of speech by the government Tuesday, following the recent detention of three individuals for their social media activity.

The Against Repression campaign, which was initiated on social media, brought together activists, journalists and others at Samir Kassir Square in downtown Beirut to express their concerns about local censorship.
