Fishermen protest Beirut coast pollution

Fishermen in Jnah’s St. Simon area staged a protest Sunday against coastal pollution in their district they say is threatening their livelihoods.

Fishermen in the area say they have been unable to fish, as wastewater is being redirected from Beirut to Jnah’s seaside. The waste-filled beaches, they say, are exacerbating poor conditions in the impoverished coastal strip, located just north of Rafik Hariri International Airport.

Baalbeck wheat farmers protest inadequate crop compensation

Wheat farmers in the eastern city of Baalbeck Wednesday protested what they said was inadequate government compensation for a failed crop, the state-run National News Agency reported.

Lawyers protest conditions at justice palaces

Members of the Beirut Bar Association and lawyers in the north protested Monday what they called the unsuitable conditions at Lebanon’s justice palaces, the state-run National News Agency said.

Lawyers held a one-hour symbolic protest in which they abstained from attending court sessions to denounce what they said were inappropriate working conditions.

In the past few weeks, lawmakers have decried power outages in the justice palaces, which they say have affected their ability to carry out their jobs.

Beirut protest decries corruption, politicians' vacations

Protesters gathered in Downtown Beirut’s Riad al-Solh Square Sunday in condemnation of the government’s failure to provide basic services, also decrying rampant corruption and abysmal pollution levels throughout the country.

“We’re here to protest everything from pollution, corruption, schools and businesses closing and even the vacations these politicians are taking while we suffer,” a mother of two, who asked not to be named, told The Daily Star at the Sabaa Party-organized demonstration.

Nabatieh residents decry local landfill after reopening

A standoff between an activist and a bulldozer opening the road to a dump ended in insults and a complaint filed with Nabatieh police Friday. Residents of Nabatieh Fawqa had woken up Friday to a bulldozer reopening a road that some residents had closed weeks ago because of its proximity to a controversial dump.

Lawyers protest countrywide justice palace power cuts

More than a dozen lawyers demonstrated in front of Beirut’s Justice Palace Friday to protest frequent power cuts at justice palaces across the country, seemingly due to lack of maintenance, the state-run National News Agency reported.

The lawyers held up signs urging caretaker Justice Minister Salim Jreissati to take action on the chronic electricity shortage at the centers of Lebanese legal practice. The lawyers lit candles during the protest, as many have reportedly been doing inside their offices during power cuts.

Nabatieh residents protest reopening of landfill site

Residents of the Nabatieh town of Mayfadoun Tuesday staged a protest against a local judge’s decision to reopen a nearby landfill.

Nabatieh Judge of Urgent Matters Ahmed Mezher issued a decision to reopen the landfill located between Mayfadoun and the nearby town of Shoukeen temporarily for one week before it is closed entirely.

The Mayfadoun municipality filed a complaint soon afterward to demand the site remain closed in view of the environmental damage and health problems they said it had caused by polluting nearby groundwater used by the town.

Tyre residents protest electricity outages

 Hundreds of residents in Tyre took to the streets Sunday, gathering in front of the Tyre municipality to protest severe electricity rationing, the state-run National News Agency reported. “Why has Tyre been suffering from a diminished supply of electricity since the month of Ramadan?” a statement issued by the protesters read. Protesters blamed the Energy Ministry for the shortages, saying it is “responsible for the electricity distribution policy and the lack of electricity in Tyre.” The protesters said if improvements are not made within 48 hours, they will escalate their protests.

Sit-in over housing loans

بسبب غلاء أسعار الشقق السكنية وغياب الخطط الإسكانية، وبسبب تفاقم المشاكل بين المالكين والمستأجرين القدامى، وجراء تورط بعض الشباب اللبناني مع شركات عقارية كبيرة فلم يستلموا شققهم  أو يسترجعوا أموالهم.

وأخيرا بعد توقف قروض الإسكان من دون سابق إنذار: ما أضر بالشباب المتعاقدين والراغبين بالشراء وعطل حياتهم ومستقبلهم، كما أضر بالاقتصاد الوطني لإرتباط هذا القطاع بالقطاعات الإنتاجية كافة.
