State employees strike over austerity measures in budget

Many state employees across Lebanon went on strike and some gathered in Martyrs' Square in protest against the draft 2019 state budget as lawmakers convened to discuss it.

The administrative committee of the League of Public Administration Employees called for a general strike in all administrations to protest the budget. The articles protested by the employees include Article 82, which would give employees 15 days of annual vacation instead of 20, and Article 90, which would require them to work for 25 years instead of 20 years before retiring.

Airport technicians protest delayed pay

Technicians at Beirut's Rafik Hariri International Airport protested Friday morning to demand delayed payments for night and overtime work. Director-General of Civil Aviation Mohammad Chehabeddine said the protest, which lasted an hour, did not affect any flights. Chehabeddine said the workers had not received overtime pay for five months. He said the delay was due to a decision by the Finance Ministry that public employees be paid only their regular wages and transportation fees until the draft 2019 state budget is passed.

LU students protest in support of striking professors

Dozens of Lebanese University students gathered in Beirut’s Riad al-Solh Square Friday to support the LU’s professors and protest the draft state budget. The students held signs reading, “We support the nation’s university. Yes to a national, independent and productive university.” Professors have been striking since May 6 to protest the draft budget’s allocations to LU and articles affecting state employees.

Veterans launch new round of austerity protests

Military veterans blocked the entrances to a number of public institutions in the latest round of protests against austerity measures proposed in the draft 2019 state budget. A group of retired military staff gathered at the entrance to the Finance Ministry’s revenues department in Beshara Khoury, in Beirut, at 6 a.m., preventing employees from entering. Other local media reported that some of the protesters had camped outside the building since midnight.

Water cannon no match for protesters as anti-budget demonstration gets heated

Veterans pushed down metal barriers and faced down water cannons Monday, marching toward Beirut’s Grand Serail as ministers met inside to discuss ways to slash the 2019 state budget.

The crowd of over a thousand veterans, state workers and teachers was protesting against possible reductions in wages and end-of-service benefits being included in the draft budget.

After pushing down one of the metal barriers outside the serail gate, the protesters marched toward the entrance, with security forces attempting to push them back.

State workers strike against austerity budget

Employees of a number of government institutions across the country observed the second consecutive day of a strike Tuesday as Cabinet met for its 17th session devoted to discussing the draft 2019 state budget.

Tuesday's strike was called for by the League of Public Administration Employees last Friday, amid concern that austerity measures proposed in the budget will cut workers' wages and benefits.
