Road blocked across the country

Protesters Sunday evening blocked the main highway that connects Beirut to Tripoli at Jal al-Dib.

Initially, demonstrators gathered on an internal road in the area before making their way to the highway as the Lebanese Army heavily deployed to the area. The highway had been closed for days before the Army forced protesters to remove their cars and tents on Wednesday.

In Beirut, protesters closed the "Ring Bridge" that connects Hamra to Achrafieh, as well as Sassine Square.

Protests not stopping just yet

Tripoli showed itself once again to be the heart of the protest movement, with hundreds gathered in Al-Nour Square by early evening. Earlier in the day, buses departed from Beirut and Bekaa to take protesters to join the demonstration, which has become known for its DJ sets and party atmosphere.

In Sidon, dozens gathered at the Eliya intersection, waving signs that read, "Honk if you're with the revolution." Others handed roses to Lebanese Army soldiers stationed in the area.

Uprising day 14: Army, protesters open major roads

The Lebanese Army forcibly opened the highway north of Beirut Wednesday, almost an hour after its call on protesters to voluntarily open the roads.

Soldiers pushed away around 50 protesters blocking the highway at Jal al-Dib and took down the tents they had set up in the area. The force of over 100 soldiers also tried to push parked cars out of the way before their owners moved them in fear of the soldiers.

Army Intelligence denied local TV channels LBCI and Al Jadeed from filming as they removed the protesters from the highway.

Lebanese cautiously welcome Hariri’s resignation

Lebanese cautiously welcomed Prime Minister Saad Hariri’s resignation Tuesday in Downtown Beirut, following violent clashes between protesters and supporters of Hezbollah and the Amal Movement.

On the 13th day of nationwide protests, a mob destroyed and burned tents belonging to protesters in Downtown Beirut’s Martyrs’ Square and Riad al-Solh, after beating demonstrators who were blocking the nearby “Ring Bridge.”

Hariri’s announcement came shortly after riot police and the Army dispersed the attackers and pushed them out of Downtown Beirut.
