Activists and family members stage a sit-in outside the Justice Palace in Beirut to demand the release of two activists detained in connection with a bank hostage situation

A number of activists and the families and friends of the detainees protested in front of the Justice Palace in Beirut on Wednesday demanding the detainees’ release, NNA and local media reported. However, the protesters did not disperse after the decision to release Zakaria and Rustom, following the referral of Zakaria to the military court as a result of an arrest warrant reportedly issued against him in absentia.

The Lebanese Army arrested protesters after tensions escalated at a demonstration outside the Justice Palace Monday evening. Protesters were calling for the release of two activists who were arrested for their participation in last Wednesday’s Blom Bank holdup. Protesters blocked a road near the Justice Palace in Beirut, decrying the arrest of Abdel Rahman Zakaria and Mohammad Rustom, who aided Sali Hafez as she held up a Blom Bank in Beirut’s Sodeco neighborhood.

In Bireh, Akkar, other protesters blocked a road on Monday morning in support of the two activists, the state-run National News Agency reported. "The road will remain blocked until the activists are released," the protesters said. Activists and friends of Zakaria and Rustom also closed down public administrations in Halba on Monday afternoon, including the Serail, governorate offices, personal status departments, religious and civil court, and Liban Post offices, according to the National News Agency.

A few dozen protesters demonstrated Sunday in front of a Blom Bank branch in Halba in North Lebanon against the arrest of two activists who came to the aid of the depositor Sali Hafez when he held up a branch of the same bank in Sodeco, Beirut, on Wednesday, in order to recover her own money, L'Orient Today's correspondent in North Lebanon reported. According to his information, the demonstrators gathered in front of the homes of activists Abdel Rahman Zakaria and Mohammad Rustom and then moved towards the branch of Blom Bank in Halba.

Activists on Wednesday evening protested in front of  Blom Bank's chairman Saad Azhari's residence in Beirut, after the bank refused to drop charges against two activists that accompanied a female depositor who held bank employees at gunpoint earlier in the day and retrieved a sum of her savings. Unidentified armed people, believed to be Azhari's guards, reportedly fired live bullets toward the protesters.
