Protesters in Saida hold a solidarity sit-in and roadblock and denounce the responsibility and inaction of political leaders after a boat carrying migrants sank off

In the southern city of Saida, dozens of people held a sit-in in solidarity with the deceased migrants. “The dead are not victims of the shipwreck but of the corrupt political class," they lamented, as motorbike convoys roamed the streets of Saida to decry the inaction of political leaders.

Protests swept through parts of Tripoli in the aftermath of the incident Saturday night that left at least six people dead at sea while trying to escape Lebanon. Angry protestors blocked roads in Qubba, Tripoli, with burning tires Sunday afternoon. L’Orient Today’s correspondents reported clashes with security forces in the area, and heavy gunfire. It was not immediately clear who was responsible for the gunfire. There have been reports of unidentified gunmen in the area.

Protestors blocked the highway near southern Sarafand to protest the arrest of a man accused of opening fire in the village the week before to intimidate activists launching an opposition list for the upcoming May 15 legislative elections. The mobilization came two days after the Lebanese Army announced it had arrested a suspect in the case, who fired shots after members of the “Together for Change'' list were locked up, beaten and their phones were taken away to prevent them from contacting the media, according to a candidate.

Pharmacists strike nationwide in mourning of their murdered colleague

The pharmacists’ syndicate called for pharmacies across the country to remain closed in mourning for a colleague murdered at her place of work. Describing the crime as “heinous,” pharmacies syndicate head Joe Salloum said in a statement that Leila Rizk was murdered “in broad daylight on Monday … while carrying out her humanitarian duty inside her pharmacy in the al-Morouj area in Metn.” Salloum also warned of the dangers health care professionals face and called on the security forces to provide better protections for pharmacies. 

Families of Beirut blast victims stage a sit-in in front of the grain silos in the port to protest the cabinet's decision to demolish the silos

About thirty relatives of the August 4, 2020 Beirut port blast victims gathered Thursday near the port, in front of the grain silos damaged during the blast, to protest their demolition, which was approved by the cabinet the same day. William Noun, brother of firefighter Joe Noun who was killed in the catastrophe, indicated that the families are “working with the Order of Engineers to present a project in order to preserve the silos’ structure.” While there was a police presence, the sit-in proceeded peacefully without road blockages or tensions.

Lebanese Army troops forcibly prevented relatives of the victims of the August 4, 2020 port blast from gathering for a protest outside the Holy Spirit University of Kaslik (USEK) on Friday, where President Michel Aoun was attending an Easter Good Friday service, according to one of the protest leaders, who said the troops also assaulted some of the demonstrators.
