EDL workers block headquarters entrance in ongoing protest

Scores of workers had protested, burning trash near EDL’s headquarters in Corniche al-Nahr. The workers are demanding payment of salaries and long-term contracts that would cement their status on the company’s staff. Around 900 contract workers have previously been given long-term contracts with EDL, while some 1,300 others are still working on a day-to-day basis, a security source had told The Daily Star. Long-term contracts include a guarantee of work for an extended period and payment of transport fees, which come to around LL8,000 ($5.30) a day, the source added.

EDL contract workers block roads in wage protest

Dozens of Electricite Du Liban contract workers on morning protested the late payment of wages by demonstrating on the Corniche al-Nahr road, blocking traffic for 15 minutes, according to a security source.

Tyre Electricity Company workers protest conditions

Contract workers for south Lebanon’s Tyre Electricity Company protested their work conditions.  The protesters cut off the road leading to the city in both directions, opposite the company's center.  The chairman of the contract workers’ committee, Ali Saad, called on the company to fix the workers’ conditions and find a radical solution to their problems.

Employee groups demand payment of workers’ salaries

A national federation of labor unions (FENASOL) and representatives from Sultan Center - a large retail company - discussed how the rights of workers can be protected following Sultan Center’s August downsizing announcement. Sultan Center – a Kuwait-based company known in Lebanon for its upscale TSC supermarket chain – has reportedly not paid their employees for several months. After the meeting, the two groups decided to hold a sit-in in front of Sultan Center’s offices.

Palestinian protest calls for asylum outside Lebanon

Dozens of Palestinian youths called for asylum in European countries to escape dire living conditions in Lebanon during a protest near the Ain al-Hilweh refugee camp, on October 13th.    The Palestinian Youth Organization for Humanitarian Relief in Lebanon organized the protest where demonstrators waved European flags and an enlarged image of a Palestinian identity card issued by the Lebanese authorities, in addition to billboards calling for asylum.   "What do you expect after my five children die because of the daily fighting and instability in the Ain al-Hilweh camp?

Veterans protest salary scale outside Parliament

Retired military personnel took to the streets to voice their opposition to the “minimal and delayed” raises provided for them by the new salary scale. They are trying to put pressure on the government to make them pay the raise to us directly, without any postponement, and raise it to an amount equal to that of all other public sector employees Protestors were split into two different groups – one protesting near Parliament and the other near the Finance Ministry, preventing employees from entering.

Lebanon tenants hold protests over rent hikes

On 01 Feb 17, tenants held a brief demonstration in the Dora area just north of the capital in protest of Parliament's amendment of a controversial rent law that they say will make rent prohibitively expensive.

Protesters gather again as Parliament convenes

Protesters congregated at Beirut’s Riad al-Solh Square regarding a number of demands as lawmakers attended a Parliament session in the nearby Nijmeh Square. A group of around 50 protesters made up of contract workers at state institutions, high-school teachers and Civil Defense employees who had previously been laid off gathered in the downtown area to demand that officials reconsider their varying demands. The public administration contract workers called for permanent employment contracts, urging MPs to treat them “fairly” and “with respect.”

Sit-in in Riad el Solh

واصدروا نداء جاء فيه: "عمر الدفاع المدني 60 سنة، وعمر مأساة المسرحين أربعون سنة وهم يطالبون بتثبيتهم ولا من يجيب. عهود ووعود وحكومات ومجالس ولجان نيابية قررت جميعها وأوصت بحقوق هؤلاء المسرحين البالغ عددهم فقط مئة عنصر. وخلال سنة 2000 وبسحر ساحر وخلال شهرين فقط صدر القانون 247 وأتبع بالمرسوم 4082 القاضيان بحق هؤلاء بالراتب التقاعدي. لا القانون نفذ ولا المرسوم أبصر النور وبقي حلم المسرحين في براد الإنتظار.

Lebanon tenants renew calls to repeal 2014 rent law

On 26 Jan 17, in Beirut, tenant committees blocked the bustling main street in Hamra in protest of the newly amended 2014 rent law.
