Tripoli protestors call for development, jobs

Activists organized a protest in the northern port city of Tripoli Sunday to call for development, rights and employment opportunities.

Dozens gathered in the center of Lebanon’s second-largest city, which has been hit hard by spillover from the Syrian conflict and economic downturn, with residents saying they have been neglected by Beirut.

Protesters held signs and covered a car with slogans such as “enough marginalization,” calling for 24/7 electricity, an end to water and electricity-related fines within 14 days as well as the closure of the Tripoli landfill.

Baalbeck residents protest Army raids

Residents from Baalbeck burned tires and closed down a road, protesting the recent raid in Brital by the Lebanese Army, which led to the death of one of Lebanon’s most wanted drug dealers.

A security source told The Daily Star that the Army intervened shortly after the road leading into Baalbeck was closed and reopened it.

“It’s not a main road, because the Army is not allowing any roads to be closed, and they informed all locals of this decision,” the source said.

Against repression campaign

A group of online activists have called for a peaceful sit-in at the Samir Kassir Square in Downtown Beirut on Tuesday, July 24 to protest the recent wave of dissident arrests.
The organizers launched a campaign labelled “against repression” because "Lebanon is facing an unprecedented decline in freedom of expression in all forms.”

Activists protest violation of freedom of speech

Activists protested the violation of freedom of speech by the government Tuesday, following the recent detention of three individuals for their social media activity.

The Against Repression campaign, which was initiated on social media, brought together activists, journalists and others at Samir Kassir Square in downtown Beirut to express their concerns about local censorship.

Road blocked in Baalbeck

عمد بعض الشبان إلى قطع عدد من الطرق الرئيسية والفرعية المؤدّية إلى سوق ​بعلبك​ التجاري ومحيط ​قلعة بعلبك​، بالحجارة والعوائق الحديدية، احتجاجًا على مقتل الشاب "جمال. ش" بطلق ناري جراء خلاف فردي في بعلبك.

وباشر ​الجيش اللبناني​ فتح الطرق ومنع المحتجين من القيام بأعمال تخريبية.

وكان قد قُتل الشاب إثر إصابته بطلق ناري في عنقه، نتيجة خلاف فردي بينه وبين عدد من الشبان بالقرب من ​قلعة بعلبك​ الاثرية. وعلى الفور تدخّلت ​القوى الأمنية​ وأوقفت عددًا من المتورّطين في الحادثة، من بينهم مطلق النار.

Beirut protest decries corruption, politicians' vacations

Protesters gathered in Downtown Beirut’s Riad al-Solh Square Sunday in condemnation of the government’s failure to provide basic services, also decrying rampant corruption and abysmal pollution levels throughout the country.

“We’re here to protest everything from pollution, corruption, schools and businesses closing and even the vacations these politicians are taking while we suffer,” a mother of two, who asked not to be named, told The Daily Star at the Sabaa Party-organized demonstration.

Road blocked in Jieh over electricity cuts

وطنية - إقليم الخروب - أفاد مندوب "الوكالة الوطنية للاعلام" أحمد منصور أن عددا من شبان بلدة برجا أقدموا غروب اليوم، على قطعوا الاوتوستراد الساحلي عند بلدة الجية، وتركوا منفذا واحدا على المسربين، احتجاجا على التقنين القاسي في التيار الكهربائي الذي تعانيه البلدة.

وقد أصدرت البلدية بيانا أشارت فيه الى أن "بلدة برجا ما زالت تعاني من تقنين قاس في التيار الكهربائي بسبب الأعطال المتكررة والعديدة على الشبكة الكهربائية، الأمر الذي ينعكس سلبا على حياة الناس اليومية ومصالحهم".

وطنية - نظم ذوي الطلاب في الليسيه الفرنسية في حبوش - النبطية، اعتصاما امام مدخل قصر عدل النبطية "كصرخة لايصال صوتهم امام القضاء"، وذلك بالتزامن مع انعقاد محكمة الاستئناف المدنية في النبطية والتي ستنظر باستئناف قرار قاضي الامور المستعجلة احمد مزهر الذي قضى بوقف الزيادة على الاقساط، حيث تقدمت ادارة الليسيه بطعن للقرار المذكور بوقف تنفيذ وفسخ القرار.

Solidarity March in Saida

Palestinians and Lebanese took to the streets of Saida in solidarity with their compatriots living in occupied territory. The marchers, some holding torches, walked from old Saida to the courtyard of the Saida Serail, chanting slogans along the way. The march transformed into a festival atmosphere at the Serail, with those gathered singing songs dedicated to the Palestinian cause, joined by well-known Palestinian singer Amal Kaawash, and younger children playing games.
