Arsal clashes first erupted between the LAF and armed militant groups on August 2nd, as Army Commander General Kahwagi declared that the country’s sovereignty, integrity, independence, unity and very existence were being threatened while assuring that the LAF was ready to confront all counter-movements. In the following days, the LAF continued deploying in the locality of Arsal and its outskirts, as Kahwagi assured the army would pursue its fight against the premeditated attacks of what he considered to be “sectarian strife-seekers.” Overall, the LAF, through its Commander, has continuously reiterated its determination in preventing the spread of terrorism throughout the country.
In its attempts to restore security in Arsal, the LAF enforced an emergency measure in 2015 in which travellers that seek to go to Arsal’s outskirts must first obtain an Army Intelligence permit. This measure was met with opposition from the town’s residents.
With regards to the issue of the detained servicemen, Kahwagi repeatedly called for a safe handover of the abductees.
