التقى اهالي المخطوفين والمفقودين والمخفين قسرا، امام خيمتهم في حديقة جبران خليل جبران قبالة بيت الامم المتحدة الاسكوا في ساحة رياض الصلح، وسط بيروت، المكان الذي اختاروه منذ العام 2005 رمزا لقضيتهم تحت مطلب واحد: عرض اقتراح قانون انشاء الهيئة الوطنية المستقلة للمفقودين امام الهيئة العامة لمجلس النواب واقراره.

Activists gathered outide ISF bureau

President of the Lebanese Center for Human Rights Wadih al-Asmar was questioned by the Internal Security Forces’ Anti-Cybercrimes Bureau Friday, two weeks after he was summoned to appear over a post he made on social media.

Asmar told The Daily Star after the interrogation that he had been summoned after a complaint was filed against him by the Catholic Information Center, because he tweeted a screenshot of a Facebook post that made a joke about St. Charbel. The original post had been made by online activist and comedian Charbel Khoury, who was interrogated about it in July.

طنية - واصلت لجنة أهالي المخطوفين والمفقودين في لبنان فعاليات احياء "اليوم العالمي للمفقود" الذي يصادف في 30 آب من كل عام، فنظمت بعد ظهر اليوم، وقفة تضامنية مع الاهالي في ميدان "شهداء التحرير" - أوتوستراد هادي نصرالله، على أن تختتمه بنشاط مركزي في بيروت ظهر الخميس المقبل، في خيمة الأهالي في حديقة جبران خليل جبران - مقابل مبنى الاسكوا.

شارك في الوقفة الى رئيسة لجنة الاهالي وداد حلواني، اعضاء اللجنة واعضاء من اللجنة الدولية للصليب الأحمر وعدد من اهالي المخطوفين والمفقودين والمخفيين قسرا وأصدقاء متابعون للقضية، اضافة إلى عدد من جمعية "لنعمل من أجل المفقودين".

Sidon residents protest as water shortage bites

Protesters burned tires and blocked roads in Sidon Monday to protest against the South Lebanon Water Authority as the city has been experiencing water shortages for three days. Demonstrators held the state-run water company accountable for ongoing supply issues in the area, which has seen an increase in water rationing in recent days.

Interruptions in the main electrical service line led to the rationing program to ensure the regular functioning of water pumps, officials said.

Tripoli workers protest unpaid salary, lack of school grants and clothing allowances

Members of Tripoli’s workers union Monday organized a general strike to protest unpaid salaries as well as a lack of clothing allowances and school grants.

The protesters blocked the municipality center’s main entrance, preventing administrative staff from entering the building and citizens from completing transactions on the eve of Eid al-Adha. Tripoli Mayor Ahmad Qamareddine addressed the issue in an interview, citing transaction errors as the cause for the delay in salary and grant payments. He said steps to correct these issues were underway.

Future current sympathisers blocked road

من جهتها، افادت معلومات صحفية بأن مناصري تيار "المستقبل" قطعوا الطريق احتجاجا على كلام ​سالم زهران​ عن رئيس ​الحكومة​ المكلف ​سعد الحريري​.

Beit Mery residents angered by plan for waste facility

Three hundred residents descended on Beit Mery’s civic square Monday evening, angry over a plan to build a waste sorting and treatment plant in a picturesque valley nearby.

“You don’t cut down trees to build a trash plant,” Serge Khazen, a mechanical engineer and resident of the town, told The Daily Star.

Some protesters carried signs emblazoned with slogans against the plan: “A trash plant in the Lamartine Valley? Who can believe it?” “Don’t pollute our water,” “Karantina, Costa Brava, Beit Mery!” – the latter putting the town in the company of notoriously polluted areas.

Tripoli protestors call for development, jobs

Activists organized a protest in the northern port city of Tripoli Sunday to call for development, rights and employment opportunities.

Dozens gathered in the center of Lebanon’s second-largest city, which has been hit hard by spillover from the Syrian conflict and economic downturn, with residents saying they have been neglected by Beirut.

Protesters held signs and covered a car with slogans such as “enough marginalization,” calling for 24/7 electricity, an end to water and electricity-related fines within 14 days as well as the closure of the Tripoli landfill.

Amal Movement slams power barges at Zahrani protest

The Amal Movement staged a protest Saturday in front of the Zahrani power plant in southern Lebanon, demanding an end to deals bringing power barges to the country and calling for the establishment of permanent power plants instead.

Speaking at the protest, Amal caretaker Finance Minister Ali Hasan Khalil said, “This stand comes to reassure our commitment to granting the people their right to receive the amount of electricity that meets their needs.”
