Some relatives of Beirut blast victims staged a sit-in outside Caretaker Finance Minister Youssef Khalil’s residence, carrying portraits of the victims and signs bearng slogans condemning the last of justice to date for those killed. Some demonstrators had painted their hands with red paint and proceeded to imprint the building’s facade with their palms and paint graffiti condemning Khalil.

Relatives of those killed in the August 4, 2020 Beirut port blast held a sit-in Saturday at the Statue of the Expatriate facing the port entrance to commemorate 22 months since the catastrophe which killed more than 200 people and wounded 6,500 others. The relatives demanded justice, carrying signs calling for it and portraits of those killed. “What have you done until now, after two years? Where is justice?” one man cried.

Saida residents stage a sit-in at the city’s municipality building to protest increases in private generator bill

Dozens of Saida residents held a sit-in Friday at the city’s municipality building to protest private generator bill increases, L’Orient Today’s correspondent in the area reports. The protest coincides with a municipality meeting including MPs from the area and private generator owners. The protest intends to “express the outrage” of the region’s inhabitants against generator owners and the fees they are charging to provide electricity. Saida MP Oussama Saad told L’Orient Today that “it is time to stop playing with peoples’ lives.”

 Taxi drivers blocked the Nejmeh Square road in Saida on Saturday morning to protest fuel price increases and the detrimental impact it has had on their work, L’Orient Today’s correspondent in the area reports. The protesters emphasized the deterioration of their living and working conditions amid the socio-economic crisis Lebanon has been facing since 2019. “The state should turn to us. Our work has been stopped because of the increase in fuel prices,” a protester told L’Orient Today, adding that “a taxi fare is now LL40,000.

Owners of commercial stores in Zahle staged a protest and blocked the main road of the industrial city to demand an end to the increased insecurity in the area, the state-run National News Agency reported. MPs George Okais and Elie Estephan participated in the protest in addition to the head of Zahle traders, Ziad Saade, and the head of the Association of Lebanese Industrialists, George Daoud. Estephan and Okais demanded that the security forces and the municipality “put an end to the insecurity, stop robberies and install security cameras," as well.

The union of government hospital employees invited healthcare workers in governmental hospitals all over Lebanon to stage a one-hour strike in solidarity with Fatima Yahya, a nurse who was physically assaulted by the director of Bint Jbeil Governmental Hospital, Tawfiq Faraj, for demanding financial dues she has not received for four months. The syndicate of nurses denounced the nursing staff's exposure to violence and unethical treatment, stressing nurses' right to demand their dues.
