Several female relatives and supporters of former MP Hasan Yaacoub set up tents near Hezbollah offices in Beirut’s southern suburbs Tuesday, demanding the release of the official.
The tents were set up at the entrance of the Loyalty to the Resistance bloc headquarters and the office of Hezbollah’s deputy chief, behind the Higher Shiite Islamic Council near the old airport road.
The women criticized both Hezbollah and the Amal Movement, to which Yaacoub belonged, for “abandoning” him and exerting no effort to release him from detention.
“Shame on Amal and shame on Hezbollah... If he (Yaacoub) has done wrong then let him stay in prison, but if he hasn’t, set him free,” one woman said from the protest site.
This is the first time an all-woman demonstration takes place in support of Yaacoub, who was arrested in December on charges of involvement in the kidnapping of Hannibal Ghadhafi, the son of deposed Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi.
Initially, protesters did not speak out against the two Shiite parties. However Hasan Yaacoub’s brother Ali, last month, criticized the Amal Movement for its negative involvement in the case, something which the party denied.
