BEIRUT: Two alleged car thieves in the eastern Bekaa town of Brital were  arrested by Lebanon's Army Intelligence, local media reported.

Fateh Mohammed al-Sayyud and Mohammed Badr al-Khashoum, both Syrians, were taken to the military barracks for questioning, the National News Agency said.

The arrests are related to a crack-down on crime rings, usually involving stolen cars which are re-sold in Lebanon or smuggled into the neighboring country of Syria. Police last week arrested the head of a car theft ring following a car chase in the Jal al-Dib village in Mount Lebanon, after the death of Sgt. Chadi al-Hajj two weeks ago. Hajj died in a shootout with suspected car thieves in the Nahr al-Mott area, north of Beirut
