Lebanese police Monday cracked down on striking Kesrouan mine truck drivers, issuing tickets and ending a roadblock of a major highway linking the capital Beirut with the coastal city of Jounieh.
A security source told The Daily Star that the 35 striking truckers received two tickets each – one for parking violations and another for non-compliance.
Each ticket is LL200,000.
The truckers had not only parked their vehicles on the side of the Nahr al-Kalb highway, but also refused to heed to police orders to remove them, causing bumper-to-bumper traffic between Beirut to Jounieh.
They were joined by a similar number of mini-bus (van) drivers protesting financial competition from mainly Syrian drivers. But they only stayed there briefly.
