BEIRUT: Tenants living under the old rent law rallied outside the Constitutional Council in Hazmieh near Beirut to demand the repeal of the amended rent law, which they claim could render them homeless.

The protesters sat on the street to block traffic, prompting the Internal Security Forces to intervene.

Ten MPs have challenged the law, which was passed last month despite not being signed by President Michel Aoun.

Tenants who pay rent based on the pre-1992 law have staged a number of protests in recent months to oppose the new regulation, which allows for an incremental rent increase.

Around 200,000 apartments in Beirut still fall under the old law, many of them inhabited by senior citizens who claim they cannot afford a rent hike.
