The owner of a factory was  arrested and subsequently released on bail pending further investigation because he didn’t inform the workers what was in the bags. The owner said he was clearing the factory prior to selling it, the source added.

Locals over the weekend decried the pollution caused to Berdawni River and called for action to be taken against those behind the act.

An Environment Ministry source confirmed in a call with The Daily Star that the factory made sweets. Although the source did confirm that some people were arrested, they didn’t go into details.

Fingers were pointed at a factory in Hzarta; however, local Mayor Hussein Abu Hamdan denied that his town was the source of the pollution Sunday.

He instead placed the blame on a sweets factory in nearby Qaa al-Reem, the state-run National News Agency reported Sunday. It wasn’t clear if the factory Hamdan blamed was the same as the one owned by the man arrested Monday.

This security incident was mapped according to the closest possible location.
