A man suspected of killing his wife earlier this week in Beirut was arrested at the Masnaa border crossing in the eastern Bekaa as he was attempting to flee the country, a security source told The Daily Star.

The suspect, identified as Fadi Ghazi Askar, is suspected of shooting and killing his wife Nahla Bahlawan with a pump-action shotgun early Monday morning in Beirut’s Ras al-Nabeh area.

Askar’s rented Hyundai Accent car, which appeared to have been used to flee the scene of the crime, was found near Zahle’s Dahr al-Baidar area Wednesday with six gunshot marks on its body, the source said. There was no indication where the bullet holes had come from. A pump-action shotgun was found on the back seat.

At the time of the shooting, the suspect had attempted to cover his face, but he was identified by eyewitnesses and CCTV cameras, the source said.

Video taken at the scene showed a man with a black cover over his head attempting to flee in the rental car he had driven to the crime scene, which authorities later said had been rented in Askar’s name.

Persons close to the victim told local media outlet MTV that the husband and wife had long-standing problems.
