Suspected thieves detained over Basta robbery
The Information Branch of the Internal Security Forces this week arrested several suspected members of a robbery gang, according to a statement released by the ISF.
On Dec. 26, the owners of a shipping company based in Beirut’s Basta neighborhood complained that unknown thieves had stolen around $30,000 from the company's two safes.
The Information Branch, according to the ISF, “was able in less than 24 hours to identify and arrest the suspected gang members.” The arrests reportedly took place on Dec. 27, in Beirut’s Al-Laja Street, at the shipping company’s headquarters.
The statement noted that the suspects – identified as Lebanese nationals M.Kh., born in 1989, A.Sh., born in 1990, and A.N., born in 1993 – were arrested in a single operation.
The homes of the three suspects were searched, resulting in the seizure of LL350,400,000, in addition to $5000. Stamps worth LL1,000,000 and documents belonging to the shipping company were also found, the ISF said.
Under interrogation the suspects reportedly confessed to, on Dec. 24, robbing the safes of the shipping company, “where the third detainee works as a money collector.”
The ISF statement added that M.Kh. was found to be the mastermind behind the operation, and was wanted on 9 criminal warrants, including for fraud.
The investigation is underway under the supervision of the judiciary.
