The Internal Security Forces Saturday announced the arrest of a man suspected of stealing money and gold from a jewelry workshop in Burj Hammoud.

The suspect, identified as Lebanese national A.Q., born in 1976, was arrested “less than 24 hours” after the crime was reported on Jan. 7, the ISF statement said, in the area of Jdeideh, just north of Bourj Hammoud.

While searching the suspect’s house, ISF found a quantity of stolen gold as well as $1200 in cash, which A.Q. reportedly acquired after selling some of the gold.

The find did not exactly match the original report of what had been stolen from the shop. According to the shop’s owner, $1500 and LL400,000 had been stolen, in addition to around $25,000 worth of jewelry.

The suspect reportedly admitted to stealing from the workshop using an iron bar. The ISF said A.Q. had previous convictions on his record, but did not specify what these convictions were for.

The stolen goods were reportedly returned to the shop owner and the detainee was referred to the judiciary.
