On 21 Jan 17, a joint operation between the Army's Intelligence and Information Branch managed to foil a suicide attack in  Hamra-Beirut street, arresting the would-be suicide bomber. The suicide attacker was wearing an explosive belt as he walked into widely-known Costa coffee shop which was the target.  The would-be suicide bomber was identified as 25-year-old Lebanese Omar Al-Assi. Initial reports had said that the suspect was Palestinian. He was carrying explosives weighing about 2 kilograms. Security agents moved him to a nearby hospital for treatment under heavy security as he sustained wounds after an altercation with the security forces.
