State Security announced the arrest of the leader of a car theft gang on the Lebanese-Syrian border in the northeastern Baalbeck-Hermel region.

The suspect, identified as J.N., was arrested while driving a rented BMW X6 vehicle after being monitored by a State Security patrol.

The man reportedly admitted to renting luxury cars from rental agencies, in his own name, and subsequently handing them over to other gang members who then smuggled the cars into Syria and sold them there.

Many of the cars were reportedly leased from rental offices in Beirut.
